>> No.8318509

>>8318501
Honestly I really liked my time there. Most of the professors are from pretty prestigious institutions and chose the job there because they wanted to teach. UWF is mainly a teaching university, so while that was slightly disappointing in my field, it's still pretty great overall. I just make fun of it because it's a pretty unknown university compared to others, and has some pretty low standards to get in.

>> No.8318514

Our teaching is pretty good, but we desperatley lack funding and infrastructures aren't always the best. There's no money for research and almost all PhD students are forced to go abroad, hence our low scores in those rankings.

Looks like the same shit covered in every school. For some dumb reason my school won't let me take Linear Algebra until I've first completed a "topics in discrete mathematics" course which is kind of some fluffy bullshit, so the way my schedule is laid out I'm not going to be able to take it until the second hald of my second year.

But I will be doing Diff Eq and Multivariable this year. I don't really understand everything to do with their curriculum, but it is what it is.

I'm American. Study physics and maths at a small liberal arts school. Transferred in from CC. It's nice, not prestigious in the wider community for this field, but I really like my department and professors. They have some pretty impressive resumes and work and the department is small and close-knit. Get to work very closely with the faculty, although I'm not sure why some of them are teaching at a sleepy little school like this when they could be doing "bigger" things. I like it here, though, and it's obvious my professors love teaching and love the material they teach.

Started here a few weeks ago, CS & Physics/Astronomy. Supposedly it's just as good as the ivies but without the same difficulty to get in - that remains to be seen. I applied to a ton of top schools but didn't get into any because I didn't have any direction in high school (I was motivated, but I didn't know what I wanted to do, plus the school was shitty and average and small with basically no resources).

Taking:
Discrete Math (self-study)
Honors Calculus I (all proof-based, should be pretty cool, awesome professor, apparently going to be basically the same course caltech students take because he went there)
Data Structures & Algorithms
Mechanics Honors (also supposedly awesome professor)
The Solar System & its Origin

I really like that they have an open curriculum here, so I only have to take like one bullshit class, the rest is almost entirely my choice.

It seems like there's a lot of idiots here, but also a lot of smart people, you just have to find them.

It really sucks going to a shitty university to be honest.

Almost everyone at my third world university is either lazy and passionless and/or retarded failing several years and still hoping to get a job on graduation. Everyone thinks academia is just a means to a paycheck.

The best professors here graduated at MIT etc., but since they're too busy with their own shit to talk to you much outside of meetings, it's lonely as hell. They think you're a genius just because of how unambitious and lazy the other students. You solve some problem stemming from top-tier research groups and they tell to consider a post-doc with them as if it's still that easy to get to top-tier universities like it was in their time.

It hurts Anons. Should've just racked up debt and gone to a 1st world university.

We just did leak some more faculty this year. Overbye, to be exact. And he's not some lowly AP or anything, he has a chair for fuck sake.

It's quite obvious what the problem is. The UIUC administration and leadership is goddamn retarded if not downright corrupt. Every policy has been skewed towards making this place worse every passing year, which is a fucking shame.

If you look at places like GT, they've caught up with and/or are exceeding us. Why? They've been doing things like stepping up their game by tightening selectivity on their student body. Same with Mich - they're going around and buying professors because they saved up money.

Meanwhile UIUC has no money, and basically has an open border policy on undergrad engineering meaning any mouthbreathing fucktard can enter just to give them that money, but it has the side effect of stupefying the entire university and widening the acceptance rate in the name of "diversity", which kills rankings and reputation.

UIUC is literally the Sweden of engineering schools.

He's upset he didn't get into a good school.

So I said he should have tried harder in high school.

I don't think you should ever really bring up high school once you're out of it, but high school does matter. What you do in high school dictates where you go to college, and that matters.

>> No.8320959

>>8320937
There is a good reason why UIUC doesn't publish selectivity information out in the open.

First, they are afraid of offending some in-stater feefees if they come off as having any modicum of selectivity. "UIUC must admit me because I'm an Illinoisan, even though I have an ACT of -20"!!

Second, it is to hide UIUC's abysmally low yield rate which is around 30% for engineering - the strongest college in the fucking university has a yield rate of fucking 30%. Yes, even in CS. In fact, they were getting so full of themselves on selectivity this year that, out of the few people they chose to admit, so much fewer decided to go elsewhere that they had undershot the size of the incoming class substantially. So they filled the space with ??? shady shit.

Underscoring the yield rate is another truth: UIUC is nobody's first choice. It has low yield rate, because it is just a backup plan for rejects from other schools. Assuming people get into somewhere else, they will almost pick that place over here. That's why the yield rate is shit. UIUC is literally, LITERALLY a dumping ground for MIT Caltech Berkeley Stanford CMU rejects and nothing more. I bet you can't find a single person in your incoming class who is out of state and lists UIUC has their first or even third choice.

And going beyond that, the school loves to fucking harp on about how it produces founders of Yelp and Paypal and Marc Andreessen and shit, but completely ignores the fact that it pisses off even their most successful alumni enough to make them refuse to give back. Other universities treat their alumni well and instill them a sense of pride, so they GIVE BACK. That makes said university rich as fuck, like Northwestern for example, or UChicago. This university managed to piss off its most successful alumni LET THAT SINK IN.

It's a sinking shit at this point mark my words. Get out while you can

I don't want to get overly political, but if you work really hard in high school, and are genuinely intelligent (so I guess no, let's be honest, not just anyone), write good essays, do cool extracurriculars, then yes it's possible.

My sister and I both got into elite ~5% acceptance rate schools and we are from a normal middle class family and went to normal high schools.

If you did all the things I said and didn't get in anywhere, you probably should have casted a wider net.

>> No.8320981

>>8320969
Good universities and shit universities can be distinguished solely by their preferred means of acquiring funding.

Shit universities love to draw in large crowds to milk tuition dollars and hopefully curtail the damage done to the quality of its alumni base by weeding most of those people out before graduation. This is good in the short term, but makes long term growth difficult for the university since most alumni will view it as nothing but a purchased service and have nothing to do with it after graduation. It is literally the institutional equivalent of a nigger living paycheck to paycheck on welfare.

Good universities practice the opposite model, in which they have highly selective admissions policies, but ensure that everyone they admit comes through the program because they chose to commit each student as an investment in the future of the university. They are treated nicely and have a good view of the university and are given all the connections and opportunities to be as successful as possible, in the hope that after they graduate they become immensely successful and give bucketloads of money back. This is much riskier than the other model, but generates much higher returns assuming they can consistently produce alumni that hit the spot.

Going to a good university and going to a shit university is literally the difference between being an expendable shitskin pajeet IT assistant drone of the collective masses and a genetically engineered hyper elite Aryan super soldier ala SPARTANs from Halo.

It's possible of course, but never guaranteed no matter how hard you work. Some work less hard and get in, others harder and don't get in. Still the solution must be more hard work then?

It doesn't matter how smart you are - there is always an element of luck. Especially when it comes to elite school admissions. It's like I win the lottery and tell all the losers to pray harder next time, lazy fucks.

You're right. Some can work less hard and achieve the same result, spend the extra free time doing interesting and cool shit, and then better their chances of getting into a school. In other words, really smart people get into really good schools.

The reason one person gets in over another is because they distinguished themselves. If all else is equal, it might just come down to the essays. What the adcoms think about them is subjective. If you call that luck, fine.

I go to MIT for grad school. Fuck that freshman who posted his ID.

It's just a university. There is nothing special about being here in terms of the place. Classes are normal. Research is normal. Only difference I can pick out from my undergrad is the faculty seem to really be trying to push boundaries, but that might just be a few faculty and the rest do incremental research.

Don't be so enamored with this place. It's an industrial looking campus (I miss my undergrad's trees and open spaces) and the people are just people. If you get in here, by all means come here, but don't treat is like Mecca. It's a research institution, and any of the top 10 schools in your field will also be doing good work.
