Why are the true distances between objects in space not commonly taught? I mean just look at this image... People seem to think that the moon sits right next to earth like it does in most images, when in reality it is actually very far away.

Take a look at this: http://joshworth.com/dev/pixelspace/pixelspace_solarsystem.html

It is commonly taught.
In grade school

Glad /x/ could help

It isn't though, not more than "children did you know it's 384400 km to the moon 8^D". It has to be visualized

>It has to be visualized
It is.
Your pic isn't the only image in textbooks. Your image is only to show relative size of the planets
>see pic of relative distance
Little children everywhere stand in classrooms, playgrounds, gymnasiums, and football pitches and mark off the relative distances.
That your local school district didn't push this understanding isn't indicative of all school districts.

As always, /x/ is happy to help

It was taught in my primary school. We learned about all the planets (including Pluto xoxo) and major comets and closest stars, and the Distance between them by representing it on the school oval.
It was eye boggling at the time.

The image is depicting the fact that every planet in our solar system fits between earth and the moon

/x/ here again.
>The image is depicting the fact that every planet in our solar system fits between earth and the moon.
Not actually.
It shows relative sizes of planets compared to the orbit of the moon. It's a pretty cool graphic. Students have an idea how far away the moon is and can therefore grasp the concept of the size of each of the planets.
What is your problem?
>>8229790 got taught about relative distance, why didn't you? Complain to your local school district or to your parents...

I get the feeling this is simply really bad bait. OP can not be this ignorant.

Possibly, but no one pays any goddamn attention except us nerds.

most people cant fathom such distances anyway
whats the point

Then you went to a shit school.

At my school we used marbles, peas, and balls, and the scale was set up in the parking lot, I don't think "pluto" was even near the school.

Because its impossible for normal textbooks to accurately convey those distances you idiot.

Not wanting to defend kids who arent curious or teachers who dont make sure that some portrayals arent to scale, but I can see why most depictions are misleading.

The thing is, most models dont want to show the scale or distance, they want to things like orbits, tides, eclipses,... in a simple way.
A lot of kids wont think "wait, this obviously cant be to scale"

Here's an image with their actual sizes OP. Here's all the planets in the same frame including the sun to the left.
I'm glad I could help :^)
