Chinese scientists are on the verge of being first in the world to inject people with cells modified using the CRISPR–Cas9 gene-editing technique.

A team led by Lu You, an oncologist at Sichuan University’s West China Hospital in Chengdu, plans to start testing such cells in people with lung cancer next month. The clinical trial received ethical approval from the hospital's review board on 6 July.

“It’s an exciting step forward,” says Carl June, a clinical researcher in immunotherapy at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

I hope they continue to make good progress. What a good day for science.

>implying you can program human genome with current computer power
you can only do eugenics by trial and error, like evolution does
all these WE GENE EDITING NOW are literally retarded, best they can hope for is changing hair color or something with 99% chance to fuck up something else in the body

eh, we can change eye color and hair color with 0% chance of fuck up

with intelligence we don't use gene editing, we just search among the billion spermatozoid for the one that has the most alleles that correlate with intelligence

This is not necessarily a good thing.

Judging by how corrupt Chinese academia is, who knows what they are actually injecting in these poor people and who knows what actually winds up happening since all of the data will be heavily manipulated or outright falsified. Because thats the chinese way.

Try again. Anything systematic is completely decipherable given enough time, resources, and availability of the subject matter. The greatest breakthroughs and leaps of insight in all of history have come from single individuals who do not have even a million dollars to scrape together to save their own lives. Meanwhile, governments and organizations waste billions on experiments that do not work. All it takes is the right ones to come along to fully crack the code, and they will. It is difficult because there are more variables involved, but to say it is completely unsolvable with the current pieces we have and that we cannot make the simplest adjustments (just like evolution does, BTW) is what is retarded. I guarantee someone within the next 30 years will prove you wrong.

This isn't eugenics. Gene editing is meant for everyone. Eugenics is meant for white people breeding with other retarded white people.

Not surprised. China will lead the biological and medical field this century. All the advances in medicine in the 20th century is traced back to Dr.Mengele in Germany and Unit 741 in Manchuria in ww2. After the war their research was continued by the US and Europe in ethical matters. China does have an "ethical" board but in reality they're known to experiment on humans without their will.

A lot of the differences between people are caused by particular alleles - a C where there's normally a T. These alleles can be created by a computer based on digital information, and injected into a totipotent stem cell via any number of methods. This stem cell can go on to become any type of cell in the body, and can even be used to create an entire functional blastocyst.

We're capable of far more than we do, and this is a step towards making the genotype and phenotype a personal decision. Designer babies are a smokescreen to delegitimize personal, autonomous self gene editing.

Molecules inherently represent cytokinetic domains - your bones fortify their own identity as bones. This limits what can be done within the body before these old domains are wiped clean. The caterpillar erodes it's own body with HCl so that it can start anew.

Gene editing isn't going to make adults turn into something else. You need bioprinting to lay down the scaffolding for the GM cells to take root upon, and then you implant this into the body - or just erode the old body with lasers or HCl, and bioprint a new one with a biopen on a robot arm.

By 2034, we'll be able to incorporate such things as biogenic graphene into our bodies. At that point, it's like Deus Ex.

The whole point of this gene editing is help adults. We can't just edit babies and hope for the best. That will take too long. This is meant for the current crop of adults who need to be edited to save their asses in the long run. Editing out junk genes will make people live longer. If this medical technique is successful then people will start living up to their mid 100s. Deus Ex was a harbinger of reality.
