Anyone here wanna be an astronaut? It's notoriously difficult, and the chances of getting selected are very slim. Despite this, it seems like there is still a lot of interest in becoming one. If that is your goal, what are you doing to try and make it happen?

Are you going the military route?

Are you spending all your time in research in hopes they need you for something up there?

Or maybe you plan to just join a private spaceflight company in hopes of working your way up the food chain.

Share your stories. Constructive criticism is always welcome, just try not to be a dick for no reason.

From what I've seen, Astronauts are the smartest, bravest, and most amazing people. And they're just hired to push buttons without thought.
Really the best way is the military way, and the reason why is due to the need for bodies that can see shit and push buttons. The nerds on the ground who make plans for colonization and granting humanity that leap beyond the stars need actual colonists, actual menkind.
I'm not saying Astronauts are shitty or unimportant, see my very first sentence. I'm just saying that they are the ground grunts of the space exploration field. And hell, who wouldn't mind being a ground grunt of that field?

Agreed. I had wanted to be an astronaut for a while and have been rigorously trying to get through school so I can get a pilots liscense. However recently I learned that you basically need perfect teeth to be sent to space which I do not. That sort of put my plans on hold for a little while, but then I had a thought. What if I just remove all the teeth with cavities/fillings and put in fake teeth? Do you think they would hold from all the pressure and g force?

With ISS retirement approaching I think your chances are less than slim.

I have no idea; the only way I'd be able to give you a certain answer was if I were to field test the idea.
My theory though is that they'd have to be pretty pricey ones.

That's assuming they actually do retire the ISS, also with the advent of SpaceX, Orbital ATK, and Sierra Nevada Corps, there may be an even higher demand for astronauts in the near future. If all that doesn't work out, I could always apply to be a tour guide on one of Blue Origins rockets haha
