Learning to recite tons of formulas just for the sake of knowing them is pointless, yes.
Learning to understand the concepts is better.
If you need a formula more often you'll remember it at some point anyway.

I went to UC Irvine and for six quarters of math and four of physics we were never allowed to use any notes. You had to memorize every formula, and no calculators on tests. Also tests had to be done in ink or you gave up your right to a regrade if you thought there were grading errors.

You never HAVE to learn a formula. Worst case you can derive from first principles best case it sticks in your mind by itself from all the times you used it
