The same pattern follows from 1^2 = 1, 11^2 = 121, 111^2 = 12321, ...

The pattern does not end, by the way.
1,111,111,111,111,111,111^2 = 1234567901234567900987654320987654321

It's not much more surprising than n/m, where m is a string of 9s equal in length to n and n<m, is 0. followed by the digits of n repeating.

These patterns are much less impressive when you realize that they are completely inevitable. It's just nice when they are simple.
