I want to go out and do something scientific this afternoon. Maybe make a big discovery and win some science prizes. I'm particularly interested in expanding people's lifespans, but anything science and important will do. How do?

Fucking why? Literally.

If you're sincere, I'd love to see that someone on /sci/ makes a thread and takes up Wildbergers challange in setting up the reals and their field structure - and then we take his criticism apart. It's a challange, in any case.

If you're not interested in a longer lifespan maybe you're interested in one of those lifespan shortening inventions. One of my favorites is called a gun. You should try it out. It will do a pretty good job shortening your lifespan I think.

If you want to increase lifespans why don't you study something like treating neuropathic pain? It's a big topic in my field because there really aren't any good drugs for it and the painkiller mainstays are terribly ineffective at treating long-term neuropathic pain. Pain is by far the most prevalent disease of mankind and causes a gaggle of secondary problems that shorten lifespan (insomnia, stress, etc.).

What kind of pain are we talking about? Because I would consider myself an expert in the field of amputations.

I'm talking about neuropathic pain, which is caused by damaged nerve endings. Commonly seen in diabetic patients, but not just diabetics.

Neuroprotection and neuropathic pain are huge topics in research now because there currently aren't any approved neuroprotectives and very few decent treatments for neuropathy.

So what if we just cut all the nerves off that go to the pain area?

I doubt that would work, and if it does it likely would not be totally effective. This kind of pain is caused by the brains receiver units turning there sensitivity way way up so they are picking up noise from other near by brainular signals and interpreting those signals as pain.

Well, one type of neuropathic pain is phantom pain and basically the damaged nerve endings where they're cut will signal pain to the brain.

Phantom limb pain is actually pretty cool because it involves the homunculus, the neatest part of the brain. Every part of your body is mapped out on a radial section of the brain, and the "larger" (more nociceptive and sensory fibers) parts have a bigger area mapped. Hands and toes have a lot of representation on that region, your heel and elbow have almost none, lips and face a lot, etc. That sort of pain is not very well understood. I don't work with it directly so I only have a glancing idea about it.

don't be angry that no one in their right mind takes life extension tech seriously, it's the last thing 'we' need

everything will be fine when you die, you'll get to do it all over again :D

Take a strong dose of psilo and DMT, you'll find an answer for both
