7914705 No.7914705[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

some guy posted this picture on r9k and asked people to find out and we're too dumb to understand the answer.

it's infinite right? if it's 1 dollar then you take half of it you get 1.50 but that means half of it is .75 so it should also be 1.75 and then u have to do 2/1.75 and then you get 1.1 and then you gotta plus it with 1 and then u get 2.1 but then half of the game is 2/2.1

so its infnite, am i right or wrong? dont be mean since im dumb

cost = 1 + cost/2
cost - cost/2 = 1
cost/2 = 1
cost = 2

Now go back to your containment board for retards.

It's recursion. There is no exit point to the algorithm.

Base = 1
Cost = base + (base * 0.5)
Cost = cost + (cost * 0.5)
And so on because it's price will remain itself plus half of itself.

>Base = 1
Where are you getting this number from?

Here's the actual (high school level) algebra:
>cost = 1 + 0.5 * cost
subtract 0.5 * cost from both sides
>cost - 0.5 * cost = 1
>0.5 * cost = 1
multiply both sides by 2
>cost = 2
...please be a troll

Please be a troll. Please dear God.

>A game costs 1$ PLUS half of its price
>A game costs 1$
>game costs $1
>gamecost = 1

>PLUS half of its price
cost = gamecost + (gamecost * 0.5)
cost = 1.5

It's price is now 1.5. The game costs 1.5. The game costs 1.5 plus half its price.

Cost = 1.5 + (1.5 * 0.5)
Cost = 1.5 + 0.75
Cost = 2.25
The game costs 2.25 plus half its price.

Etcetera etcetera. It's literally designed to make people argue because it's written wrong. There is no real answer because it's ambiguous in interpretation.

It's either literally 1.50 or infinity.

Soooo why are you so butthurt about it? It can easily be interpreted as the other guy put it where the answer is 2.

Are you seriously retarded???
>>gamecost = 1
The puzzle NEVER says this.
It doesn't say "it costs one dollar".
It says "it costs one dollar PLUS something else".

>>PLUS half of its price
>cost = gamecost + (gamecost * 0.5)
>cost = 1.5
Nothing can equal itself plus half of itself.
The cost is $1 PLUS half the cost.
It doesn't START as one thing and then change.
It's always $2.
Thus, $1 plus half of $2 = TWO DOLLARS.

You have problems with reading comprehension.

Let [math]x[/math] be the price of the game.
[math]x = 1 + \frac{x}{2}[/math]
This is what it means, word for word. No one said it's a dollar plus half of the price of a dollar. It's a dollar plus half of the price of the game.
Are you retarded or just stupid?

Let's try this one:

A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total.
The bat costs $1 more than the ball.
How much does the ball cost?

X = 1 + (X/2)
X -1 = (X/2)
2(X -1) = X
2X -2 = X
X -2 = 0
X = 2

X equals final cost. The cost of the game does not equal the final cost. The cost of the game is never equated to the final cost, so an infinite series is not to be used.

The ball costs 0.05
The bat costs 1.05

proof:
let [math]x[/math] represent the price of the bat and [math]y[/math] represent the price of the ball.

[math]x+y=1.1[/math]
[math]x=1+y[/math]
[math]1.1=x+y=1+y+y[/math]
[math]0.1=2y[/math]
[math]y=0.05[/math]
[math]1.1=x+y=x+0.05[/math]
[math]x=1.05[/math]

Not infinite; if you keep taking halves of a number and adding it, what you have is an integral, which will converge towards a finite limit.

It's actually recursive but not infinity

$1 + $0.50
=> $1.50 + $0.25
=> $1.75 + $0.125
...
So in the end we get $1.999999... = $-1/12
