I'm a highschool dropout that's been passively studying physics, medicine, (bio)chemistry, and certain types of engineering, since I was ~10.

Jokes on you, I don't ever plan to have a career. I'm 22 and certainly not getting younger. You're a fool because what you're saying is foolish, further lazily assuming "ur mad cuz ur psychologist lel" is just more evidence. The only way it has anything to with me, is the machinery of my mind had to generate the output. It doesn't draw from anything very personal.

Stay bitterly myopic.

You're completely mistaken. What I said isn't foolish, it's completely based in reality. Psychology is the second most chosen bachelor's degree in the US, but it's one of the least paying and least likely to have positions open for new graduates. You want to see proof?

http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report/majors-that-pay-you-back/bachelors - Psychology is ranked 231.

http://psychology.about.com/od/psychology101/fl/Are-There-Too-Many-Psychology-Majors.htm - The 'upside' to a psychology major, outlined by a a university psych professor. "Hanolen writes. While unemployment is indeed a national problem and a major point of concern, Hanolen suggests that the psychology major offers effective training for a wide variety of entry-level jobs."

Here's another quote from the article.
>"Both me and my girlfriend got our BA in psychology in 2012. After nearly a year of attempting to find jobs we both had to settle for clerk positions because that was the most pay we could find. $12/hr. Every job out there for psych won't list the pay on the application because they all offer peanuts. Can't be a social worker because you don't have a social work certification or social work degree. No luck getting a position at an actual psych hospital or counseling position because so much competition out there and those people keep their jobs until they die (and pay less than 25k/year). I have not even had luck with government/ veterans preference jobs"

I back my shit up. Psychology is an overrated and oversaturated degree and most people will never hold a meaningful position with it.

For the record, I've been teaching myself too, since 15. I couldn't even go to highschool. It doesn't mean shit in an argument, even if someone assumes you're something you're not. The only thing that matters is how you back up what you say.

Shut the fuck up. The other poster is right and most smart kids in psychology would tell you the same thing. The degree is oversaturated because long ago their departments lowered their curricula standards because they knew it would drastically increase tuition -which it has, today they have over 100 000 graduates per year. Now it's a worthless, oversaturated degree, while in the past most companies actually hired BA Psychology grads to do work relevant to their field.

It's foolish because it's misframing "reality" and confusing something variable for being near constant. You're oversimplifying, and ignoring that the assumption

If someone chooses to get a degree with delusions of it panning out in a way it isn't likely to, fine enough, make fun of em' all you desire, and it might even save them money if you do. That goes for any field. The difference is one approach is relatively discrete and a specific critique, the other is obnoxiously based on a broad heuristic.

People can always go into counseling and practice privately. The competitive aspects of this can go a number of directions and dependent a lot on the individual's appearance, personality, and personal tendencies. ie, a degree in psychology won't buy you insight into human behavior or the workings of someone's mind, nor even your own. But if you already have this skill, it could be very effective. More or less, if you're well known, if you're good, people will come to you. Especially as the tendency to reject pure pharmacological approaches increases, which while it could go either way, I feel like it will.

Etc. It's not about the present state of the field itself so much as expected outcomes and overall desired results. The smarter choice is probably accumulating credentials allowing you to work on bridging psychology and neurology in a research oriented position, though. What's more interesting than your links would be what the majority of these students think the degree will afford them. Both employment wise, and personally.

Eg:

>The degree is oversaturated because long ago their departments lowered their curricula standards
>Now it's a worthless, oversaturated degree
Really? I'm German so I'm curious how it works in the USA. In Germany, for most subjects there are three possibilities to get into the subject you want:
1. you apply for a university that has a limit on the amount of students it takes for a subject. The decision on who they actually take isn't based on some fancy motivation letter, but the GPA. They basically say that X amount of students get in, they sort all applications by GPA and then cut off after X students, i.e the best X ones get in. They often release the cut off GPA from previous years so students who apply have an idea of how likely they are to be chosen.
2. You apply at a university where you know there isn't such a restriction because not too many people apply. Example: applying for mathematics at a university that is famous for its art degrees. Or applying for art at a university that is famous for its science degrees.
3. You don't get in anywhere, and they tell you you have to wait a few years and then get in
But it's different for medicine based subjects: medicine, vet, dentistry, psychology and maybe pharmacy. Maybe even law I'm not sure.
These require basically a 1.0 GPA (4.0 in America), and you have to get a mental evaluation, and even then it's not guaranteed you get in.

The majority of math majors who don't teach or go into finance go into these applied fields, working at engineering firms or private research companies in biology, chemistry, or pharmaceuticals.
