Everything that could've gone wrong this semester did go wrong, and it was probably the most difficult one I've had on top of that. Got sick the week before three of my classes had exams, got sick again towards finals, my spanish prof had a hernia or something and everyone but a few people that I liked got really pissy after she was replaced.

No really, I want to know why. That homework is practically all the studying you need to be doing.
A few missed assignments I can understand, but just not doing it period is practically asking for a fucking C. Your professor notices that shit and probably gave you less partial credit just to make sure you got a C, because that's what that bullshit deserves.

No really, I want to know why.

I'm the kind of person who wants to be good at something without doing any work. I don't like the frustration of putting significant time into a problem and getting that problem wrong.

I did homework in the beginning, but when we got to integral calculus, I stopped doing homework because of my other requirements.
My test grades were 72%, 78%, 86% and 64%. The last one was the integral stuff.

I thought I finally learned my lesson and gained some discipline from it, but I guess I haven't yet.
I'll go back and study math from Pre-Algebra onwards, to build a solid foundation.

;_; all my classes are so fucking boring
the work that we're assigned isn't even remotely reflective of whether or not we know the material
we learn something hard one day, and then our assignment is just a review of something we learned 2 years ago and it pisses me off

Yep the max is 20. Some of these are curved as hell though: the analysis midterm was so hard that the prof decided that doing one page perfectly would earn one the perfect score (the test was two pages long and he had tried to make it short..)
In the same way, I got a 9.5 in probability despite having done less than half of the test.
I think they don't want our records to look too bad when applying for other PhD programs.

What kind of 'learn methods' are you using? Just good pen and paper and problems?
How many hours are studying a day?
How are you sure you REALLY understand a chapter/part/concept and can apply it to any problem you encounter related to it?

A bunch of question, I know. But I would really like to know how others do it and what I do wrong. I feel like I spend a lot of time wasting and not learning as good as I potentially could.

Do practice problems and exams. The more the better.

>What do you do to try to understand the material?
Derive everything on your own using the things you know. That way you'll understand how you got from point A to point B.

>Are you learning out from a textbook or just via the lecture?
I'm sure in math and the sciences, it's much better to just read the textbook. Lectures are largely pointless, especially if your lecturer is just boring. Use lectures as pacing, but read the material to actually understand anything.

>What kind of 'learn methods' are you using? Just good pen and paper and problems?
Google the Feynman technique or whatever it's called. It's very effective.

Lastly, don't be retarded, mop up all the free points from attendance and homework as you can because that might just be what pushes you over the boundary to get an A.

Chemistry grad student here. Can't speak about industry application process.

Largely dependent on field. If you bust your ass and get out a first author paper (or even second/third would be infinitely better than not), grad school applications can be a slam dunk. Admissions committees for STEM departments are professors who went through the same processes and understand that one can be an adept and fervent researcher while having disdain for the gauntlet of Rote memorization that is most undergrad programs.

In your letter, you can also talk about having a long term goal of becoming a professor to help underprivileged youths, etc. Even if it's pure bullshit, it will still score points with those susceptible to it (as well as professors seeing you as "one of them")

Lastly, just apply for the NSF GRFP. That thing is essentially a lottery as long as you don't half-ass the application. If you get it in undergrad, you are almost *guaranteed* admission to your choice of grad schools.

I wanted to shoot myself in the head more than once this past semester. The funny thing is even though so many people dropped the class or got close to 0, I don't think the department bothered to curve anything in the slightest, like to get an A you need above 93.

As for 213 and 214, basically I'm sure you'll never need to know anything in 214 for aero and you don't need 213 because you have your own thermo classes anyway.

Here's what I do, the other guy is not the one you replied to:

Before lectures I always briefly skip through the paragraph we're gonna do, I don't understand shit at this point.

During the lecture I take notes and don't fuck around on my phone.

Then, that same day, I read the book again and try some of the easier problems in the book from that paragraph.

In the weekend after, I do some of the harder types of problems.

I prepare for the exam by making 3-4 practice exams, and doing the hardest problems in the book.

Major key to success here is to have neat handwriting and organized notes.

I never met with an advisor before I signed up for classes here. I'm not American so I didn't know what "calculus" even was. In high school it was just called "math". So I guess I just signed up for whatever, and when I came to Calc 2 I realized I know this stuff already. I wanted to proficiency out of it, but I missed the exam because I overslept like a retard.

So yeah, I don't think 286 was that bad. Even if I fuck up on the exam, Sergey is always a nice guy and gives points all over the place rather than throwing it into the trash like they would in EU.
