There's absolutely no reason to think negatively of pure mathematicians beyond your obvious projections and insecurity. A lot of pure mathematics find applications once the language has been properly developed. Differential Geometry for example initially had no applications, but now you cannot deny its use.

Besides, it's easy to make the argument that any body's contributions are fairly "useless" in the grand scheme of things. Even a doctor is just prolonging the inevitable.

Wrong. Maybe things like topology don't have immediate applications but right now in 2015 there are many fields that need topology. Furthermore, my mathematics degree has a couple of physics classes and a couple of statistics and probability classes. That is good enough to work as a statistician making good money but this is just the tip of the iceberg, the obvious career paths it opens.
