"The Universe is shaped exactly like the Earth if you go straight along enough you'll end up where you were"

How true is this?

>> No.7726997

we don't know but it seems likely to me that somehting like this might be true

I love Modest Mouse, although for me pic related is their best. I wonder what /sci/ listens to, anyway.

We don't know, but it is clear that another ocean has been found. Another ocean on the planet, given that our blood is just like the Atlantic.

We don't really know but current consensus is that its mostly flat and endless.

>> No.7727291

Why does flat necessitate infinity? That seems like an absurd connection to make.

You better make it stop being that way, or else.

This is probably the best thread I've ever seen on /sci/

There is no consensus on the curvature of the universe. There is a consensus that the universe is CLOSE to 0 curvature, but beyond that, we know nothing else. Even WMAP analysis contradicts itself half the time.

The curvature can no be 0 and still be close to 0. It doesn't take rocket science to realize that.

To say:
>curvature is about 0...huh I guess it must be 0!
is incorrect. All you can get is the consensus that it is close to 0.

if you go long enough (but also fast enough) you'll end up in the past. So yeah, you'll end up where you were. But you gotta keep accurate calculations to make sure you actually end up there.

And when I said go fast, I meant ftl.
So know, you don't end up where you were. Not with this universe's physics, not with today's

>> No.7727627

There is no way to reach 'the edge' because it is accelerating away faster than light.
So its a moot point really considering the edge gets further away the more you travel towards it.

If expansion stopped or started reversing then it would be possible to move towards the edge but then if there was enough force to collapse the universe then it would probably be too difficult to accelerate towards the edge

>How true is this?

True enough, except that space is expanding, and the metric expansion value exceeds lightspeed after about 14 billion lightyears. So in reality you will NEVER come back to your starting point, per se. What happens is that you're stuck in a causal bubble that at the current rate is about 14 BLY in diameter.

Nahh man Modest is pretty cool. I like their newer stuff more than most fans. Sucks the quality was shit. I got to see them at The Hangout and the quality was immaculate. Dat violin player they brought out for "Dashboard".

That's just you anon. I know we're stuck viewing the world through a lens that is ourselves, but you ought to at least try to be objective.
