Was Archimedes the greatest mathematician to ever live?

If not, then who is?

Gödel and Gauss are cooler than Archimedes, but greatest is a very strong word.

Only considering greek mathematicians, I would say that Euclid beats him. I don't want to assign the greatest of all time title to any one mathematician as they have all contributed something to particular fields.

Archimedes figured out Calculus 2,000 years before Newton. His work was lost because he was so far ahead of his time and also the retard ages happened. Seriously anon, out of everyone mentioned in this thread you managed to choose not only the most shit tier but the one whose greatest accomplishment had already been worked out by Archimedes himself.

Hardly. While many ancient works must have been destroyed by monks (such as this recovered palimpsest), if it weren't for their transcribing work, many more would have been lost after the fall of Rome.

Yes! Work is killing me, (60 hours a week), but the weekends have been fruitful. Paradigms and flavours are progressing; I have found some deep, sexy dualities between functor categories and internalizations, and there has been some recent progress on categories of models. I ordered a physical copy of the HoTT book because cohesion is making me very tickled. I think that cohesion extends vertically and horizontally in reasonable ways.

Archimedes is obviously the correct answer when you consider how what he did laid the foundation for pretty much all of math.

Jesus Christ was clearly the greatest mathematician, he created the universe, you have to be good at math to create the universe, therefore Jesus beats everyone. #Christian4life
