They are renders, you idiot

>> No.7609747 [DELETED]

They're laying it on a bit thick with the orange interstage and the wing sweep srb pattern.

American doesn't have a space program: it has the space shuttle program and this is the continuation of it in its 5th and 6th decade. A rebrand and renewal of the cult, scam and tyranny in patriotic exploration nostalgism and purpose.

It's orange because it's unpainted.

>> No.7609792 [DELETED]

Just referring to the "Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter" painted orange and resembling the tapered top of the Shuttle ET tank.

Renders are fake, but NASA decided to keep it orange to:
1. Save money by not having to paint it and add weight
2. Make it look like a giant middle finger to flip off the politicians who required that it be built, but didn't provide enough funding to develop payloads

>looks like the space shuttle without the shuttle

Half the reason people were critical of SLS is because it's literally the Space Shuttle with extra development effort for no real benefit. They could have recycled the Shuttle architecture and replaced the orbiter with an expendable payload shroud with engines, and achieve more or less the exact same thing.

Putting the upper stage insulation on the interstage is an interesting idea. I guess then you have to make the interstage airtight and fill it with helium, to keep air from freezing on the tanks.

>>7610013
That would have been fine for a cargo lifter, but to make it safe for crew, they had to put the capsule on top.

Anyway, it needed a third stage. The SSME isn't a proper upper stage engine. It doesn't shut down precisely enough, and they don't want to leave the fuel tanks in orbit. The shuttle always reached orbit using the orbital maneuvering system (NTO/MMH thrusters).

If it's going to be expendable anyway, it makes sense to have a proper, substantial upper stage, even if they were only ever going to LEO.
