Can one be called a scientist if they're not actively working in their field?

Unemployed STEM Graduate

You're not doing science experiments in your garage while starving your ass off and working odd jobs? then no, you're just a lazy prick who couldn't handle academia.

Actually, I kind of am. Pic related.

I think it depends on what you've done so far.

If you're published and have done research I wouldn't have a problem calling you an unemployed scientist

>Day X+1: retired employee, no longer a scientist

If you have a BSc and don't work in stem, I'd call you an amateur scientist.

If you do or did, then just "scientist".

I was going to pursue academia until I read Economics in One Lesson. Since then I have shunned the idea.

Can computer "engineers" call themselves engineers?
Can engineering majors be called engineers?
I think you know the answer

Inb4 OP isn't even from the S in STEM.

No, OP, your IT degree doesn't make you a scientist.

Why would you even want to be one anyway. It's all just dumb empirical shit. Priori truth in pure math is where it's at.

Of course. You know being a scientist is a title a little bit like nobility except from that it is not hereditary.

Regrettably not all will heed your call when you exclaim "Stand back! I am a scientist!".

This.

If you're sitting around your mom's basement unable to get a job or get into grad school after undergrad, then you may be pushing it.

If you've worked for some years, have good experience and decent pubs, you can probably get away with it.

If you're a PhD or post-doc, that's a different conversation.
