Gonna put on my evolutionary psychology hat here:

Males's evolutionary fitness increases linearly with their number of partners. That is, the more females they mate with, the more children they have. Thus, sexual selection drives males to mate with as many females as possible.
Females however, due to the higher costs of gametogenesis and gestation, will bear the same number of children if mating with one male as if mating with ten males; an increase in mate numbers does not correlate to an increase in mate fitness. Fitness for females is maximized by being choosy about who one mates with, so as to ensure that her limited number of offspring has the highest possible quality of genetic material.

The above is true of typical mammals. However, in humans and other animals where intensive parenting is required from both, drivers for male promiscuity are damped down by the need to rear offspring. Rather than humping anything that moves in the hope of having more children, male humans restrict themselves to fewer mates so as to ensure some basic level of quality for their offspring. Females face a similar dilemma, but the factors of their success remain less about the number of mates and more about the quality of mates.

And that's why men (always looking for something on the side) and women (always looking for the next better deal) are sluts.

The consequences are not equal, like you seem to imply, for the simple fact that maternity is unquestionnable.
A man cheating results in drama and nothing more. A woman cheating results in nihilism, the end of her mate's bloodline.

This is like comparing rape and murder. Both are heinous crimes, but murder is obviously worse by several orders of magnitude.
