What STEM field is best in terms of job security?

>> No.7501851

>>7501835
PhD in math.

>> No.7502125

Depends. On a bachelors alone? None, except computer science because everybody wants a code monkey these days (shit, you don't even need the CS degree. Just pick up industry-relevant skills and build a portfolio on github).

>> No.7502136

Depends if you mean staying entirely within one field or building transferable skill sets.
If the former, inorganic chemistry. It's boring as fuck, no one wants to do it, but it's essential. I remember the careers advice always used to be go for colour chemistry, now it's go for battery chemistry.
For the latter, biochemistry. You have to learn a little of everything, and you have easy side steps to medicine, chemical engineering, computer modelling and organic chemistry. Just a shame the pay is shit...

I guess having the only option of being a teacher when you're a math PhD still puts you in somewhat of a secure spot, but that number is fucking bullshit. If you're an undergrad and are thinking 100k-200k, you're in for a disappointment.

stem fields that have job security are the ones involved in skill or trade rather than pure knowledge or theories.

medical field:
nursing
physician
pharm technician
psychiatry (growth in mental problems for vets and children)
chemistry technician or chemists
surgery
anesthesiology
medical technician
ICU
engineering:
machine operators or machinists
computer programmers
welding
electrician
technical communications and or network technicians
repair technicians
construction and construction management or civil engineering

>> No.7503076

None of them. What you really need to do is learn Mandarin or Hindi, because all the best-paying work is over there now. You can literally double your salary well into the six-figure range by being able to train a lab in China to do the same menial work you did for a company in the States, and they'll pay your flights out there and give you tons of time back in the states.

Yes that's why call centers are now stereotypicaly portrayed as being located in Mumbai. Seriously though, once the Indians and Chinese get decent enough at designing and building their own reactors, they'll export the technology to South America and Africa. This could have an effect on the US nuclear research job security since developing nations can now purchase the technology they need from somewhere other than America.

Yeah chemical engineers will get paid way more to spend a few months of the year in china helping set up a factory for a chemical or some other job, simply because there's an immense demand over there. And you don't even need to be hired by a Chinese company, you just need to work for the right branch of a major chemical manufacturer.

i hate to say it.. but it's probably CS. i just got my EE degree and kind of regret not majoring in CS. i have a pretty mediocre GPA and no internships. my friend was CS, was in the same boat academically and immediately got a job at a major defense contractor. i'm still looking for a job. and i'm actually better at programming than circuit design, despite my degree. it's easy to program on the side. with EE, you need thousands of dollars of equipment to really get into circuit design.

>all these people saying chemistry/chemical engineering is where job security is

Uh, what? Did I miss something? I'm a senior majoring in chem with plans to go do a PhD in organic or a ChemE masters. I've tirelessly researched the job market for chemists and nearly every source I read says jobs are dwindling for chemists. Fuck, google "chem grad school" and the 5th or so option is "I can't get a job even though I have a PhD".

Seriously though, did something happen recently that improved the job market? Is it on the upswing for industry? I was under the impression companies just fuck and chuck their chemists as they need them. I damn near had a fucking mental break down this summer because I started to realize I would never achieve my goals or dreams in such a shitty job market. You have no idea how happy this would make me if someone could link me somewhere that tells me chem is coming back to relevance.

>As far as I'm concerned,

And I bet your opinion of soldiers is worse.

Many more people die domestically from car accidents than from any and all weapons. Obviously automotive engineers are soulless, evil killers.

>but intent!

Intent matters in a vacuum. Automobile death statistics go back a hundred years. They know what they're doing.

Besides, superior weaponry deters aggression. Pax Romana existed for a reason, and so did Pax Americana.

well here's some compelling reasons:
1. Pay is good to great
2. Stability is definitely there
3. Benefits are great (government)
4. Work is actually stimulating and cutting edge

You can think that you're a purebred chemist all you want, but if you don't want to do defense, get used to making viagra pills or solutions, cause that is about it.....or academia......I'd much rather research countermeasure protection or advanced weaponry, sounds like a more productive use of my time.
