below the knee above the cut. you'll need that joint for your prosthetic. cut at a 45 degree angle toward the knee as you cut into the leg, from both sides, sort of like a V where the concave part is towards the knee, that way you can stitch all the way around the site. you're going to need a saw for the bones though, that knife is gonna give you a rough time.
