Important article to address the underlying mechanisms behind photoredox catalysis in organic synthesis. A lot of people approach photoredox catalysis with the mindset that extensive catalyst design is critical for the success of a desired transformation. Yoon and co. demonstrate that these reactions can often undergo chain mechanisms, and consequentially could be optimized in different ways based on typical radical kinetics. They also debunk the oft-seen "light/dark" experiments typically used to discount radical chain mechanisms.
