>corporate talks about "changing long-term strategy"

>starts laying of PhD chemists left and right

>drops an entire branch of process & biologists

>adopts stupid new "efficiency-based strategy" that involves hiring temps more frequently

>expects temp work to equal that of a seasoned 10 year employee with a doctorate and very specific development goals

fffffffffffffffffffffuck pharma

Yes, but not exactly news.
The job market has been shit in the US for that industry for years.

Guys in top management usually have technical degrees too, over 50% of fortune 500 CEOs (when you add science to engineering's 40%) do at least, not sure about statistics in other upper level management.

Like the other anon said. Squeezing profits like this out of companies is old news, the top guys get rich and the company goes under in the decade.

Such short sightedness should be fixed by a free market in theory, but of course no one seems to get that Keynesian economics doesn't fucking work if you want a top down efficient economy.

The government would crush it.

The economy relies on pumping out cheap scientists and engineers, if jobs paid them fair wages and gave them job security that is on level with the scarce technical skills they offer no one would try to start their own enterprises and thus create more jobs.

To hell with pharma, their only concern is to come up with some shit new cholesterol pill to push once the patent on their old one expires.

Literally no shits given about scientific progress or treating anyone who can't be milked like a fucking cow for the rest of their lives.

They never had a reason to. Unions have historically been for unskilled workers. Skilled workers are typically valuable enough to their employer not to be fired at a whim. If this is truly no longer hte case, this would be a good time to start one. Though don't expect much. Ever since Reagan, unions haven't exactly been spring chickens in the US.

So instead we have hysterical propaganda about how if you don't get a degree in whatever science or technology happens to be popular right now, you'll be forced to break rocks in a Chinese salt mine for the rest of your life.

Is that really why pursuing a career as a chemist means you're going to get shat on for the rest of your life? Because chemists are now considered 'unskilled workers'?

>mfw

>> No.7372857

>>7372851
It's not that chemists are unskilled workers, more that companies have been trying to drive down wages for scientists and engineers awhile now. Why do you think the constant propaganda about lack of STEM workers keeps getting pushed? In reality there's a surplus, but wages are still considered too high, as in they are sometimes above poverty level (what you could get a Chinese or Indian immigrant to work for).

>> No.7372918

>>7372857

Yeah, that whole lack of STEM field jobs is bullshit.

>> No.7372948

>>7372463
Because they're smart enough to realize unions are anti-free market, and bad for the economy. If you're so butthurt about 'muh wages' perhaps you should move to a socialist country like Cuba, libcuck.

It's not a free market when the government purposefully controls it by using tax money to subsidize and increase STEM graduation rates.

Government's are more anti-free market than unions will ever be.

Dude no, if you can't get funding for grad-school don't do it. If you already have undergrad debt it's going to be extremely hard to pile more on top.

The best way to get a PhD is to try and find a research company that will hire you full time while also funding gradschool, if you can't find something like this don't stay in science just to get into further debt.

You don't have to do your PhD right away though, even getting a QC job for a few years before going back to gradschool isn't a bad idea.

All work is terrible, it's better than getting into debt for a degree that is over saturated and doesn't guarantee you a better job anyway.

Reminder, capitalism is resulting in accumulation of wealth at the top while everyone else becomes dirt poor. Low-skilled jobs were first to be hit, now typically middle-class jobs are being hit.

Socialism is the only answer.

I'm particularly keen on most implementations of socialism.

You know what I think? We have no shortage of food, or other resources. Why not just inherently give everyone the bare minimum required to survive? Do away with property taxes, ie, no cocksucker can come take your property if you refuse to participate in society. Break up large financial institutions.

Capitalist concepts can stay around, but wage slavery would be eliminated via work being inherently optional. You just wouldn't have any luxury. No gas for a car. No money to pay for loans. Perhaps no fuel in the winter. I'm not certain of the specifics, yet.

The ripple effect of this would be interesting. We also waste, disgustingly, as a society, simply because it is economically viable. This would be prohibited, only for food at large restaurants at first. Penalties would be severe fines. I'm tempted to consider a firing squad for disobedience and continued waste, whether in engineering or otherwise, but that's just built to go wrong.

We would eliminate a lot of unnecessary complexity and begin to do what we all bicker about, but ultimately ought to be happening. A person can dream, I will probably continue iterating on this, though nothing will ever come of it.

These typos are the worst. One simple word omission and what you're intending to say is completely reversed.
