English is the language with the highest verbosity, so in theory you can express the most thoughts with the fewest words via English. That's not necessarily true in practice, of course, where some of our basic words are highly ambiguous. Imagine how much easier it'd be to talk about feelings if we had 4 types of love like the Greeks.

>English is the language with the highest verbosity, so in theory you can express the most thoughts with the fewest words via English.
topkek

not even remotely true
English lacks the more advanced grammar of agglutinative languages or even just a simple case system of Greek, Latin, German, Icelandic, most Slavic languages and countless others which give each words more nuanced meaning than in English which must rely on word order, sentence structure and more verbosity to get the same information across

also even if English has more words than most other languages (which is a contested claim) the idea that English speakers have a larger vocabulary than other language speakers is ridiculous and baseless

English is easiest to learn, it is the most logical.

In german the sentences are literally backwards, where the first half comes last.

Yes. You made a large statement about language and had nothing but arguments about vocabulary which are so stupid they're practically invalid.

No. I made a normative statement about a language's potential and then I made a positive statement about how it exists in reality. I made these statements in response to an OP who said he believes English to be the "best".

I'm not sure why I'm having to explain my own post on 4chan right now.

So now let us see which one is superior. I'm betting some languages like hebrew which have a mathematical backing are slightly better than other languages because of its simplicity without loss of generality.

What language is structured as clearly as English?

In general there are clearly superior languages when it comes to ease of use and ability to present ideas clearly.

>> No.7369676

Every language has approximately the same expressive potential because they all talk about a similar range of human experience, but English arguably has more terminology already built in that is useful to modern life since it has become the dominant language of science and technology.

Define what makes a language "best". Some languages sound nice, some are ugly, some are easy or hard to learn (depending on your native language), some are useful and some are not.

>> No.7369682

>>7369676
yeah other languages just don't have enough words so people just don't talk about science and technology if they don't speak english

>> No.7369697

>>7369682
Obviously not, but they borrow a ton from English to do the job if they didn't already have the words, because English is the dominant international language. But I guess I'm making a false dichotomy by implying that loanwords aren't "part of the language" which borrows them.

I submit that if Machine code is a language then DNA is also a language.DNA is the greatest language as it can physically interact with and shape matter which ultimately becomes self aware. Are there any other languages that are self aware?

>> No.7369705

That's not true. Languages differ in complexity. For example, in Australian aboriginal languages there are no words for numbers higher than three.

Well, that's why I said "approximately". I know there are certain gaps, but they tend to be superficial, and if you live in the dirt eating kangaroos, lacking complex numbers is pretty superficial, same goes for south american hut-dwellers like the Piraha who also lack a detailed number system. Though I think they just use Portuguese when they need to trade with outsiders anyway.
