SpaceX is launching their seventh ISS resupply mission at 10:21 am EDT on Sunday, at Cape Canaveral.

Onboard the Dragon spacecraft are various science experiments and a new International Docking Adapter which will be installed on the ISS to be used with later manned Dragon flights.

SpaceX's secondary mission for CRS-7 is the sucessful landing of the Falcon 9's first stage on their new drone ship.

Elon's twitter is usualy the first place to look if you want to know how the landing went.

Here's how the landing works.

Also, if they do recover the first stage, it will be shipped to Texas where it will get a thorough inspection. Then, it will be flown again, probably with a boilerplate capsule.

After that we will truly be in an age of reusable spacecraft......

I hope they finally stick the landing. The third time's the charm, right? But really I'm just tired of seeing them fail.

Why doesnt the barge have some sort of robotic arm to catch the ship instead of relying on the ship landing like a ballerina?

I mean it's impressive to be able to land it that way, but is it necessary?

Rockets have lots of compressive strength on the vertical axis, but laughably little on the horizontal one for their size. Think of an empty soda can- if you do it just right, you can put the full weight of the average child on an empty can and it won't crumple, whereas the same child can dent the side and cause structural failure with a single finger. Rockets are very similar, but also 150 feet tall.

This doesn't tell me why it couldn't be done the other way.

I mean, had they just put huge nets on either side of the barge, it may have not exploded.

Sure maybe a robotic arm might not work because of the compression force on the sides, but why is it that we couldn't have some other "catching" procedure to help aid in the landing?

Don't be surprised if it's scrubbed, lads. The summer weather here in central Florida is pretty much constant severe thunderstorms, but they often hit late morning to afternoon, so we may get lucky. Pic related is a storm over kennedy space center I coincidentally took the other day. On cloudless days this is a prime spot for watching rockets.

Confirmation of success/failure may not be communicated to the public for much longer though.

If it goes well, SpaceX will surely mention it.

If not, they may not necessarily comment on it but you can guess how it went.

Yep, and because they were crash programs that the feds needed for ICBM maturation and Corona, Lockheed and company were given much more leeway than Orbital or SpaceX.

Basically, the early aerospace guys got in on the ground floor because Eisenhower wasn't a fan of the arsenal research system and nobody else in the private sector could do it. They got a huge head-start in the industry and are still reaping the benefits of it.

SpaceX and Tesla are Jewish companies. ULA benefits from SpaceX willing to prototype new ideas they can later build better for arguably cheaper, and Tesla doesn't directly compete with the big three (Tesla sells luxury cars, most car sales are utility vehicles and commuter shitboxes).

They're both popular though due to a charismatic CEO and good branding. Henry Ford himself had a similar reputation as did Howard Hughes and Steve Jobs.
