Lexus makes it. They manufacture luxury cars. Anything they are going to produce is going to be expensive.

hoverboards require metal underneath
you can't use it just any old place
it'll only work is specialized hoverboard grounds

I really doubt that thing can hold a person. Otherwise they would have shown it in the video.

If it doesn't work over any surface it's not a real hoverboard. Not a practical one, keyword here.

A practical hoverboard can do all of the following:
-hover over any surface
-hover at least 10 cm above the ground
-hover for at least one hour
-accelerate to 15 mph
-not require safety goggles to avoid laser damage to eyes
-not produce noise over 80 decibels

I absolutely reject anything that does not meet all criteria listed as it is not a true and/or practical hoverboard.

>-hover at least 10 cm above the ground

Even the back to the future hoverboard wouldn't meet those criteria.

Hoverboards haven't been developed (afaik) that can turn like boards that make contact with the ground/snow/water/ etc because they have no medium to drag their edges through to create friction on one side of the board as to allow a sooth turn. How could we overcome this /sci/?

>> No.7354670

>>7354662
Funny because there actually is already a ducted fan hoverboard that does meet those two criteria. It's just that it's so inefficient that it can only do so for like a minute.

Couldn't meet the "hover over any surface" criterion, too.

>> No.7355135

>>7354665
You can't. All you can do is have a high thrust that can be used to counter your forward momentum and build sideways momentum in a reasonable amount of time. However a rotor-based hoverboard capable of hovering several feet off the ground would have minimal obstacles to navigate and allow for the wide turns required at moderate speeds.

You would also want to have wheels to allow tackling hills without stopping(or crashing) and even carrying forward momentum into uphill climbing.

The thing is, it did work on water. It still hovered, he just couldn't push off.

could you use diamagnetism , at least in principle, to create a howerboard that would levitate over any material ? The magnets would have to be absurdly powerful to support a person, but in principle , if you could make an arbitrarily powerful magnet..?

It would work. Provided you have the right material under your feet, and the internals of your own hoverboard are supercooled. It's all just magnets and discs very carefully doped with certain minerals.
