Qualitative, not quantitative dominate the field 70-30. Don't be a chemistry major if you want to learn about the sciences.

A true major for those interested about the physical world would be applied math, physics, mechanical engineering (which covers the basics at least), or chemical engineering. If you happen to major in those, and do well in them, we chemists know. Yeah we know, don't tell us about how we're a weak science. We know you could get through our material compared to the most of us. Don't tell us that biology majors who are an entirely qualitative field earn more per annum than us, and are in higher demand, we know. The other 30% of us who actually love physical chemistry, we know about the meek prospects ahead. I think most of us are realizing that material science has replaced us as a major.

In all honesty, I should have walked out with the accounting classes because that pays fairly well, and is rather straight forward.

I feel like my experience with philosophy will in no way aid me in any of my attempts at acquiring a job, but I find it to be a positively compelling field that allows me to examine the fundamental nature of my inner self, as well as the world around me in a more humanistic manner than the sciences can offer. I ultimately wish to learn as much about the fundamental nature of reality as humanly possible in my unending quest for self-actualization in the highest form. I do not, however, wish to to inflict my natural dispositions upon the populous in the way that an egotist does, but rather embrace the disparate differences that allow us as humans to advance in ways that no other known species can, intellectually.

I'm very interested in mathematical logic and foundations. With regards to the computer science minor I'm mainly taking the theory based courses (my university is very relaxed about what we can take and they offer many advanced courses at the undergrad level including proper recursive function theory).
>>Thoughts about your field?
Many of the topics I find really interesting other mathematics students don't care or know much about (I get the same impression from the grad students except a few in the computer science department). At the same time many of the topics that other mathematics students seem to go crazy over I just don't find that interesting. I mean I see the value in the field and how it applications to other parts of mathematics but it's often just not useful or interesting to me. I feel like I spend so much time hopping back and forth between the computer science, philosophy, and mathematics departments that I don't really fit the "pure mathematics student" archetype.

I feel really bad for the people who think it's a good, generic field to major in with little passion. I know job prospects are mediocre, pay might not be great, but I can at least enjoy what I do and constantly learn new things.
Unfortunately, it feels like most significant research has been done decades ago (organic), and right now we're either just collecting data, mining for novel molecules, or fixing what we're pretending is broken. I'm not sure how much longer I can be entertained by simple, well studied reactions, and every time I try to do (semi-) original research, improving conditions/selectivity, my colleagues will pull some old reference that ends up working flawlessly.

Wanted to coast through college, and decided on math since high school stuff was easy and I liked math (back then still thought of it as plugging and chugging). Got wrecked by Analysis course in freshmen year and almost gave up. Finally became passionate after doing Algebra and Topology.

>Thoughts about your field?
Although the degree says applied math, I only learned about certain tools (PDE, real & complex analysis, functional), but not how to apply them. My current advisor is edging me towards existence theory for PDEs, and he says that it's considered applied. Then I see his toolkit consists of Algebraic topology and variational calculus...

So for now I plan to continue learning new tools, and hopefully try to do something useful with them (looking at Machine learning for now)

Unfortunately people who doesn't take love and life in general rationally are often unable to understand that. There are people who believe that love is something magical and can't be explained or understood. Some of them even believe that they have to throw shit at people with the same waifu just because this is part of being in love or other shit like this. They either get upset and jealous or they try to shitpost them hoping that they will stop having waifu, which obviously doesn't happen if their feelings are genuine.

A little bit disappointed in the standard of maths we do. I mean it's pretty much guaranteed good marks with fuck all study, but a bit boring. I figured, though, with the amount of material available (albeit illegally) online, I can self study my way through an undergrad maths curriculum on my own time, so I chose engineering instead because I can't self study a certified engineering degree or self study the lucrative jobs that become available with it.

Because 90% of the CS majors just go into it because they think it's about making video games so they avoid all the interesting theory based courses. The remaining 10% are fine but they aren't really that noticeable.

In my university specifically the math department shares a building with the computer science department. The running joke amongst the math portion of the building is that you can identify the CS students because they don't shower, they wear bring shit and fedoras, they sleep on the ground in the hallways, they use the lab computers for video games and porn, and they're dumb as fuck. Also, from the women in particular (in the math department) I've heard that a after taking any CS class they always have guys from that class trying to hit on them years later still introducing themselves as a guy from said CS class (I think this is because there's virtually no women in CS).

Interesting, diverse exposure to many science fields, unit op approach is a great way to think in terms of modelling reality, both technical and business/social.
Control and Reaction engineering are both extremely useful and fascinating.
Because you have a background in so many different fields you can catch up quickly and do research in any other field. It's great to have an overview of so many fields from management to bio to physics.
Also I want to start my own company and ChemE is truly the best degree to equip you to do that because of all the management and legal courses you take on top of the most lucrative and industrially useful technical.
In terms of why I chose it for undergrad, it is by far the most useful to get an engineering degree for your undergrad because being able to get your Pr.Eng. is far more useful while your options for grad-school remain wide open (while doing pure is a waste of time because even if you go to engineering grad-school a bachelors in engineering is still far more valuable since you can't actually become a Pr.Eng. with a post-grad). I originally intended to do Physics in grad-school, but I found chem. thermo and mat sci to be far more interesting (and because I'm doing SS anyway, it's literally under the same research chair shared by the ChemE and Physics departments)
>>Thoughts about your field?
Would not recommend to the autistic. There's a lot of politics in this field and you need to be very extroverted, energetic and be willing to lead idiots to survive. Unless you're extremely ambitious I recommend studying pure science like chemistry/physics if your sole interest is research in academia or study law/medicine/finance/accounting if your sole interest is money.

electrical engineering is not needed, the greeks made a clockwork computer powered by a hand crank and charles babbage designed mechanical computers that would be powered by hand cranks or steam

without understanding how to make software for computers the computers themselves would be useless and there would be no TCP/IP or ARPANET or a stanford packet radio van doing anything of importance

as for a mechanical internet you could make the mechanical computer choose 0 or 1 and then it would tug a rope that registers at another computer as a 0 or 1 depending on which rope was tugged which would pull back on a lever that would signal a 0 or 1 to the computer
then you connect ropes to another computer and you have internet
i don't know if ropes count as mechanical or whatever, but you can replace that with some equivalent.

If you want to take all the courses each semester for both majors it will be very hard. I don't regret my decision, but I usually recommend doing one or another and not taking more than 4-5 subject each semester or you will go crazy (in my first years I came home late at night after six hours of medieval philosophy and aesthetics to wake up early in the morning and run to linear algebra II barely awake, worth saying, I failed linear algebra II and had to take it again the next term).

The problem will not be so much mathematics but philosophy, not that the latter is harder, but it requires and awful amount of reading about pretty much everything at first (history of philosophy, metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, logic, etc) and unless you're a very fast reader it's unlikely that you will have a lot of time to do math exercises after you finish your reading.

>>7304483
>I feel like my experience with philosophy will in no way aid me in any of my attempts at acquiring a job, but I find it to be a positively compelling field that allows me to examine the fundamental nature of my inner self, as well as the world around me in a more humanistic manner than the sciences can offer.
Leaving aside your commentaries about the nature of your inner self and stuff, a branch you may be interested is philosophy of mathematics, or mathematical philosophy. The first worries about the metaphysical foundations of mathematics, say for example, the 'usual' math we learn rests on classical logic and its techniques to solve problem (e.g: ~~p->p) than in the end rest on a very strong realism, this is known as mathematical platonism (this is, mathematical object are abstract object as real as you and me, not just a human construction); alternatively we have the several critiques to the strong realism of platonism in mathematics and the view that mathematics is a human construction, thus, resiting in intuitionist logic.

I'm a 6th year physics PhD candidate. I picked it because I like physics. If I didn't, there is no way in hell I would have been able to put up with the last 6 years of pretty much continuous work. My thoughts on my field are that it is pretty good. If you go into a computational discipline, you have a wider range of available industry tracts to take and your background is generally flexible enough to go into several different research fields and be well qualified for a wider range of postdocs than if you go straight theory. Experimentalists, especially those that do a lot of sample growth, probably have the most opportunity to continue in research, but they are more limited overall from what I can tell now that I am looking for a job before I defend.

What do you work in?

I'm currently a pure math major with a comp sci minor but considering just doing a double major. In your opinion, is it worth it?

Undergrad

>What year are you?
3rd

>Why are you taking that major?
Seemed like the broadest engineering field that would allow me to make stuff

>Thoughts about your field?
-Not enough classes with fabrication, not that industry workers make anything, to my knowledge.
-Will definitely need to get related internship for summer after junior year; I've done minor stuff here and there so far, but haven't gotten actual industry experience yet, though that's mostly my fault for procrastinating
-fluids/thermo classes are pretty boring, design classes are ok, dynamics is very interesting
-may branch off into aero or gain more ee knowledge at some point

PLEASE take circuit analysis 1 as an elective. It teaches you how to analyze DC and AC circuits and gets a bit into three phase AC.

It could help you at some point on a multidisciplinary engineering project. So basically every project you ever do.

not him, but at my school we take instrumentation lab which is basically crash course electrical engineering.
no 3-phase stuff, but a quick course on building all sorts of circuits from basic RC to op-amps to ADCs and DAC

I believe it had something to do with AND and OR statements, so boolean logic. So the information given was represented like A n B n C n D = 3 and so on. You were supposed to figure out which statement coordinated to which section / intersection. The 6 categories was mainly just the professor being a colossal dick and trying to get people to run the clock getting stuck on that problem. It was the 2nd question on the final, so it trapped some people who got stuck on it and forgot about the time.

>>7307807
The class wasn't bad. It was incredibly informative and it was only hard to follow at some times. I got an A (college doesn't do A+, but my percentage was >100%), but the only difficult times were when the professor glossed over something important, or gave us questions like the one I posted about. There were pretty much 1 or 2 per test, and sometimes he couldn't solve the questions. But other than that, it was a great class. It was very helpful for me, being a CS major.

Do not confuse it with biotech, or nutrition. My professor accurately described it as "everything that occurs to food from the field to the box"

it's the little shit that everyone takes for granted, and no one ever notices it.
currently im an intern for a firm that is designing a new method of PUV+PEF processing targeting L. monocytogenes.
there's tons of routes you can take (i.e. food engineering, food processing machinery enginerring, food chemistry, sensory evaluation, product development, food materials and packaging)

i love it and there is actually a fair amount of demand. i see it as just chemistry with a marketable title for the food industry. next year im joining my professor's research group. theyre trying to find ways to repurpose pomace, a fatty pulp "waste" product of olive oil production. its not really "waste," its actually plenty nutritious but rather bitter, and there is no demand for other than for industrial processes. the goal is repurpose it in food, for example, pasta with 25% pomace and 75% durum and semolina content. the final trick is to get consumers to buy it, but thats not our job

MechE is generally considered more versatile, if you aren't sure do MechE, only exception is if you're dead certain you want to work in the chemical process industry because the only thing MechEs aren't really legally allowed to do is to design reacting systems.

>>7306574
>I think I've seen everything except for pure Chemical Engineering.
Heh, there's this running joke in my department that ChemEs don't know what their major is about until their senior year and it's kind of true. Most programmes don't start control and reaction engineering until their senior. Pretty fun, but difficult as fuck especially if your school stacks vanilla reaction with biochemical reaction engineering. It kind of draws on everything you've done especially in chem solutions thermodynamics, transfer processes and continuum mechancis. Non-ideal mixing and solid catalysts implies a bitch of coupled non-linear PDE systems to solve, make sure you're very comfortable with a high-level programming language if your curriculum has those later chapters of Fogler.

Memorizing pathways was more tedious than I thought, but later on I don't doubt I will enjoy stuff like genetics and protein chemistry. In general it's a versatile field that is very relevant to both basic research and industry as far as I know.

>Major?
Chemical Engineering
>G/UG?
Undergraduate.
>What year?
Going into junior.
>Why are you taking that major?
The thought of developing new technology excites me much more than pure science per se (not that pure science isn't awesome and necessary). It's also the only engineering field that lets me study Thermodynamics and Chemistry beyond a freshman level, and the pay/demand is fucking fantastic in comparison to science degrees (and even most engineering degrees).
>Thoughts about your field?
Pharma/biomed, energy, and electrochemical engineering are all interesting industries to me and seem to have a demand for good chemical engineers, which is good. On the other hand, I fear that a lot more people are going into the major these days, and certain not-that-great schools are gradually dumbing down their undergrad curriculum to accommodate for that. Thankfully I'm transferring to a better school this fall, with a more rigorous curriculum and a much better reputation.
