Not necessarily. I think most /sci/ posters come here as 18- and 19-year-olds who passed multivariable calc and physics I, and are now convinced that they'll do PhDs in high energy particle theory, and that everyone who doesn't is not doing science.

But, there's a decent amount of undergrads in the life sciences and who want to go to biomedical research who post here, so I can help out. As I said, I've been there and done that, so I can offer advice. When people make loaded, blanket statements like, "You can't do anything with a degree in biology" or "The job market for chemistry majors is shit", I can call bullshit. Not to say that you'll be getting six-figure offers from industry -- or, any offers from industry to be RA just out of undegrad, for that matter -- but if you play your cards right, you'll be able to put yourself in a very good position (it may take a few more years, though).

>>7255382

Sure, that's the issue with posting proof. I was one of a few kids who studied chem and mol/cell bio, at a small college. (I realize no one gives a shit about undergrad prestige, but my point is that I wouldn't be too difficult to find.) I'm now in a grad program that has ~30 students total, with 8 in my year. A quick Google search of my majors and my undergrad --> grad school combo would easily turn up my name; even if I blurred out my name, I would be very easy to find. And, like this guy says, if I cross out my school and date, then everyone would bitch and moan about how I'm full of shit.

Now if you want to call me a liar, you do actually have to prove it if you want a leg to stand on. I'll give you that in prominent biotech hubs (the San Francisco Bay Area and north San Diego come to mind; never lived in Boston), but there are other areas with a strong biotech/biomedical research footprint that are more affordable: Washington DC and Northern Virginia, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Rochester, Raleigh-Durham, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Ann Arbor, Nashville, Houston, among others.

Regardless, my point was that you won't be getting six-figure job offers from industry just out of undergrad. (I'm assuming that you won't be married and raising children as a 21- or 22-year-old senior in college.) With a BA/BS and a year or two of research experience and/or internships, going to academia and getting a lab tech job is in your best interests. You'll have the opportunity to demonstrate you're a capable scientist, make some connections, and figure out what you want to do. These jobs are stepping stones to graduate or medical school or industry. After you put in two to four years, by your mid-20s, you can take your career in any number of directions, and you'll have open doors that you did not know existed coming out of undergrad. I went the grad school route, but I have friends who went to industry as RA IIs/IIIs. That was a few years back, now they're senior RAs or associate scientists, pulling high-five to low-six figures in their late-20s and early-30s.

>But on average you won't even break six figures in your life time doing anything less than Mechanical Engineering.

Interesting data, very good find. I'd like to see the full methodology.

This site puts the average biochemistry/biophysics PhD salary at $81k+: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/life-physical-and-social-science/biochemists-and-biophysicists.htm..

These sites, at $87k: http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Degree=Doctorate_%28PhD%29,_Biochemistry_%28BCH%29/Salary and http://work.chron.com/biochemistry-graduate-salaries-9614.html..

I think a key point to emphasize is that a biochemistry PhD is not a professional degree; in other words, unlike an MD or JD, you're not bound (by debt or culture or tradition) to be a biochemist. As one of the links I posted shows, there are various occupations in which biochemistry PhDs are employed: the list includes some which pay well (senior scientists in industry easily clear $100k even at smaller firms; $110k - $120k is conservative), and others which do not (post-docs). Moreover, given just how saturated academia is, there are hundreds of biochemistry PhDs which graduate every year that are going to be on the post-doc treadmill for the subsequent decade; employed, technically, as biochemists, their salaries of ~$40k to $45/yr (more or less) will drive down the average.

I haven't seen too much data on the average salaries of biochemistry PhDs in industry, of scientists or senior scientists or directors. Or, for that matter, I've never seen any data on the average salaries of biochemistry PhDs who have transitioned to the "business side", to management or finance or consulting. (Albeit, it would be pretty difficult to control the variables here.) But, the little data I have seen on scientists and senior scientists in industry puts the averages at $80 - $90k and $100k+, respectively. For directors, research fellows and other higher positions in R&D, I've seen values from the mid- to high-100s, and even low-200s.

Why are you people hung up on degrees and Alma maters?

These things don't make you smarter or more knowledgeable. It's just things with artificially created worth.

Any benefits you would have gained in "higher education" institutes would have been from your own desire for knowledge. Which makes me laugh when people make fun of others for not having these pieces of paper and calling them "uneducated".

Your argument is baseless and contradicts itself. You say people can earn the equivalent through self education, yet ignore the fact that most work fields require proof of education, and a minimum standard of which one must know to get licensed. Not only that, but you assume everyone who goes to college doesn't apply themselves, which is wrong. If you want to go to a doctor who says he knows what he's doing, or lawyer, or want a plumber or pest control tech or almost anything, you want them to be licensed. We can't all just claim we know what we're doing without creating a minimum standard for which to follow, which is where accredited colleges come in.

How am I ignoring the fact? It's what my entire post is about. The fact that the degree is the proof of education, and proof of skill. That's what I believe is wrong and is limiting people.

That's where the artificial worth of the degree comes from, in the first place. People have gotten so used to using the degree as a crutch that HR will often times dismiss your resume immediately upon learning that you lack a degree.

The whole point of my post is creating an environment where interviews can sufficiently test potential candidates where the degree or "proof" of education becomes redundant.

Try thinking outside the box sometimes. Idiots like you are so hung up on "muh degree" that you can't even picture any alternatives.

>Because you don't believe people should have to work hard to get well paying jobs.

How do you even come to this ludicrous conclusion? It's the exact opposite of what I want to preach.

My entire argument is that the piece of paper called a degree has artificial worth created by society, and is used as influence into getting a job.

An ideal situation would be a degree being unnecessary IF you have learned the proper skills anyway. I'm not advocating abolishing higher education or degrees, for fucks sake. I'm advocating giving people who are skilled but with no degrees (AKA autodidacts) the same chance of success as people with a degree.
