What are some secondary skills that are very useful for advancing myself, and my career? I'm talking about skills, disciplines that aren't necessarily taught in college but can be learned by oneself on the internet with some time, practice and focus.

I will contribute with multiple infographics.

It really depends on your career.
But most essentially and often overlooked, is the ability to speak correctly to a group of people and to communicate ideas.
Useful to get funding as a scientist, to share ideas within a group as an engineer, it's really important.

You can also learn a bit of programming, it can be taught in college, and will probably in most STEM cursus be taught, but hey, practice won't hurt, and if you can show you did some interesting stuff on a computer it's a bonus point on your career.

But really, speaking clearly and the ability to express ideas are the two most important skills in almost every fields.

Also hobbies related to your field won't hurt.

> Controlling your emotions, moods and emotional states, particularly empathy and inconfidence. Empathy is a cancer of getting what you want. Inconfidence is that to achieving what you thrive to achive.

> Point and flow focus - basically being able to ignore all the buzz aside from the target and paying attention to everything around at the same time respectively.

> Mnemotechnics - if you master this, you will become God among man in STEM and life in general.

> Knowing cognitive and memory biases - keeping them in mind all the time.

There's substantial evidence to suggest meditation or mindfulness (aside from obvious drugs) seriously help with the first two, but that might be overblown. Of course, you will end up using some sort of meditation if you're going to master these traits.
And I guess being a good real life actor and lie catching, but that kinda goes without saying.

Writing. 4chan is surprisingly good at this because you have to be concise and accurate without writing a wall of text that people won't read.

The type of technical writing that is useful in science is exactly the same.

A foreign language is always a nice hobby: good mental exercise, way to pick up chicks, useful when traveling, way to make friends. The list of benefits is endless.

I meant to say good for practicing, not that the standard of writing here is good some of it is godawful. Some of it tries too hard to be good and is consequently awful.

Never over-embellish your writing to try and sound smart. Write the minimum possible. Also I am aware of the irony of fucking my own post up.

Learning to write, speak, and communicate well. Incredibly overlooked skills.

>> No.7251760

This. I'm getting a PhD in Chemistry but I've realized how underrated areas like philosophy or english are in terms of real world use. Yeah you'll never use anything you read from Hume or Descartes or whatever. But if you're in college then taking philosophy classes (or something similar, and taking them seriously) teaches you to comprehend, analyze, and to organize and write down your thoughts in a way others can understand. Being able to formulate and present information clearly is incredibly important in the real world no matter what career you're in.
