Why are you behaving like that? You don't even have a weak understanding of the subject, so you aren't really in a place to make judgements of the field. Would you really like me to go into detail, or are you being dense to irritate me?

Topology is an understanding of the mathematical properties of form. Its like next generation geometry.

Some of it is niche to the point of frivolity, but other aspects have applications in design and engineering, especially related to manufacturing and the like.

Cool! I apologize, I thought you may have been trolling. :)

As I said in a different thread today, topology is simply the study of collections with a notion of "closeness" between members. Because of this broad definition, topology finds many applications. For example, only understanding the topological structure of a railway map is necessary to find your way to the next destination. But on a far less concrete level, topology finds applications in areas such as networking and computer science. Physicists use topology to construct spaces that model the universe, and the way forces interact. By determining when two objects are homeomorphic, we can show that many statements about one hold in the other, and it reveals deep connections between objects that seem otherwise-disparate. Furthermore, adding additional structure to a topological space lets use find more specific statements that also connect the field to abstract algebra and complex analysis; even number theory.
