Alright, serious question though.

How the fuck has NO ONE landed on Mars yet? It's just baffling to me as a 25 year old how mankind could watch a man walk on the moon, live on television, 1969, then decide to spend billions on warfare and killing one another or selling shit to one another for the next 46 years.

What the fuck happened?

We were really only doing the moon landing for propaganda reasons. I mean, we actually did land on the Moon, but we didn't have any clear reason for doing so besides "we'll show those damn Ruskies!"

Once we won the Space Race, we hadn't actually come up with any reason to keep going, and it was really expensive, so we stopped. NASA was prevented from doing much further by the rich source of congressional pork its activities provided; this, for instance, is why we're still stuck using solid rocket boosters - because Congress really likes the jobs those plants provide. The net result is that NASA spends so much funding on building new rockets it doesn't have the funding to launch any new missions for them - we can't build up any infrastructure.

We'll start doing space again as soon as somebody comes up with a good reason for it - right now, a lot of people doing private space companies are betting we'll be able to make it profitable.

We have remote controlled robots now that can do the same job without all that pesky food, water and oxygen to worry about.

We have a rover on Mars now that is busily going about its tasks and sending the data back. If/when it finally breaks down, it's just a machine.

Drones are the future. Human pilots went the way of the room sized computers.

Man divided and began to keep knowledge secret from one another once more; the petty ego of nation states making them selfish. The few dammed the stream of knowledge, and the once great lakes of the public domain shriveled. Soon there wasn't enough water for it to rain and feed the stream, bringing about another information dark age. All progress without direct commercial potential slowed, as people began to look inwards on in their civilization. In what could only be described as an intellectual collapse: man forgot what they had once dreamed. They forgot why they had ever looked upwards in the first place. In a moment tragic amnesia they turned their gazed down and away from the stars.

The End?

> What the fuck happened?
There is a lot of varied opinion on this.
Here is one take.

The Apollo project was the successful culmination of many years of America catching up with German and Russian rocket technology.
That era was a truly exciting time for space science in our nation.

However, by the end of the Apollo years, many Americans had grown somewhat blase' of the whole thing. The latter
moon landings for example often were hardly covered by the news media. So we have many years with such a vast series of
accomplishments that Americans are kind of satiated.

Even so, there was still enough interest in space and even manned space activities in the early to mid 70's.
One of the concerns was the cost of everything. The concept of "reuseability" seemed a way out of some of the expense problems,
so now:

Enter the Space Shuttle.

The Space Shuttle was initially supposed to be a nifty low cost quick turn around alternative to the larger one shot
rockets of the day. It turned out to be more complex to do regular shuttle flights than first imagined.
Even though the Shuttle has arguably been a successful program overall, some of the issues with the shuttle's development
and operation even more firmly entrenched the belief that space work must always be super expensive.
Perhaps even more important is the shuttle program had the effect of directing all attention to lower earth orbit (LEO)
missions. The good news is that there were/are a lot of LEO projects worth doing. So to some, the shuttle seemed
to be enough of a space program for America. So projects like mars landings were just not within the scope of the
Space Shuttle. The Space Shuttle kind of "took up all the LOX" in our nation's space aspirations.

Today we have new systems being developed by NASA, SpaceX and other entities that should make more advanced projects possible.

No one has landed on Mars because it's not politically tenable. You've gotta convince the electorate that spending the tax dollars needed to go to Mars are a worthwhile expenditure, or else the electorate is more likely to vote for someone that panders to their interests.

The public's eternally wishy-washy perception of cost (Muh Taxes) versus payoff (Men on Mars!) is literally the only reason we haven't gone yet.

jesus fucking christ.

you live on a planet with limited resources, growing population? yes?
is it not in your interest to protect your own genes?Do those two things, limited resources and growing population tell you something? yes it is in your interest to do so, billions are small price to pay for survival of your genes.

War is perfectly logical, you are just too stupid to understand it.The name of the game is survival not "le getting to mars and being star trek!!! XD!".
Mars will not do anything for our survival. We have no way of terraforming it, any base we make there will need constant fixing because of extreme conditions: lack of atmosphere, radiation, temperatures. It takes months to get there and months back. We have no way of quick, reliable, reusable interplanetary transportation. Putting people there would be even more idiotic and wouldn't serve any other purpose but to show how big your dick is.
Wake up, this isn't sci-fi, we can't just take a dead planet and make it alive again. Just like that, on a whim of some hippie that can't even understand something that has been with us since forever, war.
That's how universe works! We just wish it and it comes true!!! FUCK YEAH, I want to fuck emma watson! Oh shit!, you guyzzz emma watson is on my dick as I'm writing this post oooooohhhh

It's effectively just wasted money. You won't make any profit in any reasonable way in any reasonable time span.

You can't profitably mine anything and get it back to earth, you can't properly utilize it as living space because it isn't terraformed, there isn't really anything obvious to research there which could be used for developing new technologies and tourism isn't remotely affordable.

oh, I think most people would be more than happy to pay for a Mars colony. We are already willing to pay for all sorts of idiotic schemes. The moon landing itself was wildly popular. We just haven't had the leadership who wanted to do it. Mostly because none of them were really interested in space, and also because space program is one of the easiest places to cut.

Here's my idea. Let's have 10-person Mars colony, and let's auction 5 of the seats to the highest bidder. I be you could generate 10-20 billion dollars this way, there are a lot of rich guys out there and wealthy organizations willing to send a guy. The other spots are for legit astronauts.
