The Question, whether maths belongs to natural science or to sciences of spirit, proceeds on a imperfect classification of sciences. Math is a structural science.

– Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker: Die Einheit der Natur

meaning: math is the science of the structure of thinking an logic

Wow, it's almost as if Weizsäcker read the wikipedia page about formal science.

I don't think that's the question, because I don't think an answer of this mere classification will be interesting or help with anything.
I also don't think people will ever come to a conclusion about it, but then again, people unexpectedly discovered (universal) computation and we can rightfully, I think, claim to know more because of it, than the people 150 years ago, about the nature of math.

imo, as this anon said >>7110102

to me it is the language with which you can explain physics -> reality. It is useful because it explains with precision, relationships in nature.

Further on mathematics became it's own subject, so now we can think of it as a subject on it's own.

Maths is limited by nature, it has to agree with reality. We structure it by logic since that seems to be how nature is structured.

Mathematicians and physicists work side by side, as mathematicians keep developing relationships that are based on the type of logic that seems to be what nature displays, and by following those laws rigorously, it can predict and superseed physics in many situations, and likewise physicists can use it to communicate their studies and research with each other, and to study relations in nature with it.

They go hand in hand, but even if maths is by now its own subject, it is based on, derived from, structured and bounded by reality, as the axioms are required to comply with nature and the progression of adding on to it through logic is ok because nature works that way.
