Rare to see a geology related thread on /sci/, so i'm gonna ask u guys for some advice.

I'm currently getting a bs in geology and im fixing to finish my minor in math (all it takes at my school is multivariable calc, diff eq, linear algebra, applied stats, and discrete), and it turns out I am really enjoying my math classes so I'm considering taking extra math classes, but the upper level ones seem highly abstract and unrelated to geology. Will taking extra math classes beyond that ones I've listed be a waste of time? I am hoping to do something related to hydrogeology in the future.

thanks m8!

the main problem with taking a course in fluids is that the one at my school is offered in the engineering department and has engineering prerequisites (physics 1 -> physics 2 -> statics -> dynamics -> fluid dynamics). I am taking university physics 1 and am doing meh (B-) in it right now, do you think its still worth taking those engineering classes to take fluid dynamics?

I'll definitely take a course in PDE's and a couple programming classes though!

OK, so I'm an amateur collector, I'm starting up my collection. What do you guys think of my collection so far?

- Malachite w/ Azurite
- Sulfur on unknown matrix
- Mexican Firewood Opal on clay matrix
- Galeta crystals on Dolomite
- Manganoan with Tetrahedrite crystals
- Goethite
- Aragonite (like >>7097281)
- White Aragonite
- Green fluorite
- Wavelite (most expensive in my collection)
- Green beryl on granite matrix
- Obsidian
- Dioptase
- Sugalite with unknown crystals
- Rainbow quartz
- Smoky quartz (brown)
- Smoky quartz (black)
- Rose quartz
- Calcite (regular)
- Calcite (tri-color)
- Pyrite
- Smithsonite
- Black tourmaline
- Pink tourmaline (in the mail)
- Apatite
- Cinnabar with Opal
- Zebra jasper
- Peacock ore
- a dozen agate
- a dozen geodes
- a few unknowns
- a few who I know the name, but too lazy to check out

The unknowns im getting checked out at my university. My university has only one geology class, and the only professor for it is a chemist but apparently knows his stuff, so hopefully I'll identify most of them (like 10 others)

I'm currently taking a class with applications on moving surface problems, that has applications in crystal growth models, so that could interest you.
Needs some solid backround in numerical analysis though.

You might just take an intro to numerics class to see if you like it.
If you don't you'll at least learn some basic programming which is never a bad idea.
