Now. You either see the light as shining directly on it (like it is) and your brain automatically adjusts those colors for direct lighting, making them appear blue and black in your mind. OR your brain interprets the light as coming from behind the dress and sees those colors as white and gold.

It's actually not that complicated, I don't understand why so many people struggle to understand this illuson. It's not about what the colors on the picture are, but what the actual colors of the dress are.

You can see in the background that there is too much light exposition, but it is not clear where the light comes from. There are two ways our brains can interpret this :
- either we think that the light comes from behind the dress, which creates a contre-jour effect. Then we assume the real dress must be lighter than what we see, i.e., white and gold

The darker shade of yellow is far too warm to be black. Anyone who has mixed paints should notice this. Yellow can go green or brown depending on how warm(light, yellow, yellow-gold, orange, lighter brown) or cool (dark, greenish yellow, muddy shades, browns, babypoop).
