My brain obviously DOES correctly adjust for shadows, since both the real dress AND the picture (as tested by any paint program color picker) are blue and black.
White and gold are an optical illusion, visible only to the intellectually challenged and homosexual amongst us.

Look, just because your inferior brain can't tell black from gold and you shitty eyes can't tell blue from white doesn't mean you're any kind of expert in optics or psychology.
Just because you see gold and white doesn't make you qualified to explain your obvious failure to perceive reality.

If your brain sees that there is a shadow on a color that is factually blue, and then interprets that as white, then your brain must be pretty bad at what it does.

Plus there's clearly light reflecting off the black stripes and the picture is overexposed. It literally looks less blue than it actually is, and your brain responds by making it worse? Shitty brains.

>> No.7097775

>>7097759
You're on the right path, but it's much more complex than that, and there are about a billion different reasons why one's brain would be wired to assume the color is in a shadow or in the spotlight. A billion, of course, being an underestimate, as it's much closer to infinity. It has far less to do with any eye ability. It has everything to do with unconscious intuition by your visual cortex which, again, is caused by any number of reasons.

>> No.7097778

>>7097606
just looking at this gives me a headache

>> No.7097785

>>7097774
You're a retard. "Factually blue" is not in any way relevant when your brain is deciphering something. You can pretend it is, but it's not. You have no control over your visual cortex. So what does the brain see? It sees a pale grayish-blue and brownish dress.

Now. You either see the light as shining directly on it (like it is) and your brain automatically adjusts those colors for direct lighting, making them appear blue and black in your mind. OR your brain interprets the light as coming from behind the dress and sees those colors as white and gold.

The reason it's different is because the coloration of the dress that we all SEE (not perceive--actually see) lies pretty much perfectly in ambiguous territory. It's both what blue and black look like when exposed to direct light, and it's what white and gold look like when in a shadow. Unless you've never in your life experienced an optical illusion, your brain is just as "shitty" as people who see white and gold.

>> No.7097787 [DELETED]

>>7097785
wow. not that guy, but i actually looked at it again and imagined myself holding a light to the dress and could see it as blue and black, though very overexposed, then as someone shining light on it from across the room and can see white and gold. my brain is perfect because it can interpret both possibilities.

You've found a way to consciously trick your unconscious, in other words. I don't think it means your brain is somehow better. Simply the neural pathways are easier to manipulate for you for, again, an infinite number of possible reasons. That is pretty cool though.

It's actually not that complicated, I don't understand why so many people struggle to understand this illuson. It's not about what the colors on the picture are, but what the actual colors of the dress are.

You can see in the background that there is too much light exposition, but it is not clear where the light comes from. There are two ways our brains can interpret this :
- either we think that the light comes from behind the dress, which creates a contre-jour effect. Then we assume the real dress must be lighter than what we see, i.e., white and gold
- either we thing that all the picture is too lighty, which means the actual dress should be darker, i.e., dark brown and blue

This sums up a good portion of it, but there is also some proper differences in vision in play.
I'm of the blue fraction, and e.g. looking at (>>7097368), I understand what the white people supposedly thing, but I the blue on the dress picture is still far too strong to think that this could come from a shadow - unless there were actual blue light in the room like in a club.

but this has nothing to do with how you perceive the colour of the dress. That depends on whether you see the photo as overexposed or not.

The dress definitely appears white and gold in the picture because it's cropped and you can't see if it's in shadow or not.

Modern society teaches everyone that they are right. In the face of an illusion that only rarely shifts colour they have to tell everyone that their subjective experience is the best and right one.
They'll shitpost about the right colour being white and gold too after it changes for them

Well, to the Blue/Black crowd, it's not just subjectively blue/black, it's also objectively blue/black, and it doesn't change for them.

On the other hand, for the white/gold people it's white/gold subjectively, but not objectively.

I also see gold and white.

As a photographer, I have to question how grossly misadjusted the camera must have been to produce that image from that blue dress. Was the infrared filter missing or something?

There are blue tones in the white - this is common for mixed indoor/outdoor lighting. But I am mystified as to how anyone sees black when there are obviously darker objects (and more brightly lit) right behind the dress.

This could be important. I see the dress in shadow, with brightly lit objects behind it. What do the blue/black people see?

We see an overexposed and glaring photo of a black & blue dress in yellow indoor lighting, so the image contains a dress with cerulean bands and dark brown bands (dark gold at the top). We immediately notice the overexposure and compensate to conclude "that's a picture of a black & blue dress".

I don't see what's so hard about this. You can open the image in any image editing program and take a sample of a "white" region and confirm that they are objectively blue, as well. No use in asserting "it's white and gold!" and then accusing the people saying it's black & blue of being close-minded to everyone else's perceptions.

I made these stills to show that the fabric really does change color in mid video as the camera changes from outdoor to indoor mode. Notice the eye dropper swatches on the bottom,

I'm assuming you have the camera's color on auto, and so when the camera saw all the blue in the dress, it thought it was outside and thus distorted the colors.

We have a lot of vidya players here, which requires a minimum amount of problem-solving skills; thus a lot of people came up with little tricks like swapping swatches back and forth and holding them over other swatches to compare colors easier to solve the "problem" of subpar hue differentiation skills.

That's my half-assed theory anyway.

This is a lie propagated by black/blue fanatics.

Nobody has any issue looking at the ACTUAL dress and seeing it as black and blue.
However, the PHOTOGRAPHED IMAGE is clearly white/gold due to the lighting.

I've always been good with color illusions in that I can get myself to see all different ways of looking at things

But with this dress I cannot for the life of me get my brain to see white and gold no matter how much I look at it.

The darker shade of yellow is far too warm to be black. Anyone who has mixed paints should notice this. Yellow can go green or brown depending on how warm(light, yellow, yellow-gold, orange, lighter brown) or cool (dark, greenish yellow, muddy shades, browns, babypoop). Black can have aspects of this in certain lighting, but it is unmistakably black. Yellow in darker lighting brings out different shades of yellow.

The "white" is blue in all pictures. The blue is far too rich for it to be white.
