I took a neuroendocrinology class thinking it wouldn't be too intense because it was crosslisted in the psych department. First day of class the professor told us we had a few weeks to learn the name and structure of every sex hormone (there are many more than just the couple people are familiar with), along with it's synthesis pathway from cortisol which meant the names and structures of every intermediate as well as each enzyme involved in the process. Our first few classes after that were basically that picture.

I don't think that's the issue with Wikipedia articles on math. The issue is that it's trying to be as complete as possible, without really ever explaining the basic ideas involved. Almost every introduction sounds like "[...] is a special case of [irrelevant and hardly useful generalisation] and is related to [List of things with increasing complexity]. It is named after [Some guy]". That just gives you no idea of what you are dealing with. It gives people not familiar with math the impression that they'll never understand it before they understand a million other things, one more complicated than the last.

Clearly you don't even know how to write a proof.

If .9999... = 1, then:

1 - .9999... = 0.000...0001 = 1 - 1 = 0

Now, for any finite real number x, there exists a finite n such that x = n * 0.000...0001

BUT, if 0.000...0001 = 0, then x = n * 0, and thus all real numbers must equal zero! This is clearly absurd, and so I have shown that 0.999... cannot possibly be equal to 1.

Flawed by saying first that a finite number equals zero in the second number

1-.999999....= 0

so it can't also be equal to .0000....000001. Nice try, but the more rigourous proof is done with geometric series and it is completely true that .999999.....=0

fuck, flawed in the second line

In a geometric series you start from n=0 so you can omit the (1/10) in the numerator.

>for any finite real number x, there exists a finite n such that x = n * 0.000...0001
This is an incorrect theorem.
You are basically saying "for any finite number x, there exists a finite n such that x=0n"

>> No.7044926

>>7044835
no it's correct
the flaw is in assuming 1-.99... = .00...01
this is only true if you assume .99... terminates, in which case .99... = .99...99 =\= 1

There's only one species of humans: homo sapiens
If you want to count all the homos, there's still only one living species.

False, there are three species:
White
Asian
Black
Jew

Speaking of, is the designation "subspecies" used in a serious sense in taxonomy? Because why aren't different races (or whatever groups with genetic similarity) considered subspecies, or even domestic animal breeds? Are race, breed, and subspecies functionally synonyms?
