This post right here? This was me almost three years ago.

Since I made this post I started doing undergraduate research, I've gone to three physics and astronomy conferences, published my first paper, I've helped my department rewrite their lab curriculum, passed the GRE, and started grad school.

Five years ago I was a wage slave working graveyard shifts at a gas station. Today I'm a GTA at a private university working on a PhD.

moot, 4chan, /sci/... you guys saved my life.

moot, I wish you only the very best with wherever life takes you next.

it's a joke about how the sum of the natural numbers can by represented by -1/12 through zeta function regularization. i.e. 1+2+3+4+5....= -1/12.
the expression is valid but that equals sign has an asterisk on it.

if you havent taken anything past pre-calc maybe...

the asterisk is required because the equals sign doesn't mean what it is usually understood to mean. of course 1+2+3... is divergent, but it can be represented by -1/12 through a special function. without any context, 1+2+3....= -1/12 is wrong...sorta.

4chan's not going anywhere.

The real question is what can be done to improve things on /sci/?

>> No.7024504

>>7024487
When something is meaningless there can be no confusion of its meaning, there is none. You are then free to give it meaning as you please. How does an equality sign in the context of divergent series have more meaning to someone who has taken something past pre-calc than someone who hasn't? It would certainly be the other way around, the most you can discern about a series is whether it is convergent or not and so that's all the meaning it can have to you. I'm afraid you're not firing on all cylinders here.

>When something is meaningless there can be no confusion of its meaning, there is none
but it's not meaningless in any way. i dont even understand why you're saying it is. The only thing i could think of was maybe you were the type of guy that whined everyday in hs math class about "when are we gonna use this" so any use of numbers beyond a caveman-esque need for them is meaningless to you. In other words, in was an insult.
>I'm afraid you're not firing on all cylinders here.

Yes, saying a divergent series is equal to something is meaningless. It is unbounded and not equal to anything. Your striking out hard on your "insults" I have never done or been interested in anything but pure mathematics for their own sake and I have not yet given you any reason to doubt that. You have an extreme cognitive deficiency and/or equally poor reading abilities. I would really double back on our "discussion" and make sure you didn't misunderstand something because I'm almost certain you did. The only alternative is that you're a troll, but I'm going to go with that you're just a retard.
PS. I just got why you think I was the "whining about uselessness guy" meaningless and useless is not the same thing you dimwit. I'm complaining about you being inefficient refusing to let me reassign a unused sign. I'm not saying that "it doesn't have real world applications" or something like you seem to think. I really have to reiterate here, you are incredibly stupid. Like, third world stupid.

I'm sorry, but all the trips were cancerous, in comparison to anonymous posters their contributions were really shitty, but of course they are remembered for the occasional good post when they had their trip on. The "good" trips left around the same time many other posters left.

Around 2012-2013 there was a mass emigration, mostly to stackexchange and pf, caused by the deletion or banning of anything that didn't fancy the new janitor's pop sci interpretation. Most real STEM majors and professionals just came here to hang out and occasionally post about /sci/, not really to talk about their job. I think /sci/ is starting to become popular and/or less dead again though.

We had a thread a couple weeks ago where people had suggested the idea of a weekly 'lecture series' thread on /sci/ where anons summarize and present material they covered in their classes that week.

Quality posts would be informative for others and encourage anons to review and understand their own material. This could easily be expanded to encourage anons to present on research project as well and eventually as time goes on and quality contributions are saved, related material could eventually be put into OC infographics like >>7025418 and archived.
