Also, since I'm at it, why the fuck's the kg (kilogram) the SI unit of mass and not the g (gram)? I mean, I know that you'll have to deal with much bigger numbers using the gram, but it's much more sensual and less of a pain in the butt. Using the kilogram means you'll have to transform the Mg (Megagram) or the Tm (Teragram) or whatever else into gram and then into the kilogram again (You can go straight into the kg, but I don't do so and it's still a pain), which is just a pain in the fucking balls. I feel France really don fuck'd when they chose the kg as the SI unit and not the g.

That shit's long dead and it's never been accurate. The meter was defined by a rod, but got changed into the distance the light travels in 1/299,792,458 seconds. People are trying to standardise the kg and if that was accomplished, I'd rather have the SI unit changed into the gram instead of the kilogram because it's a basic value, or I'd also like to see the kilogram changed into a basic value with a different name because reasons ('kilo'-gram).

But xkcd isn't math humor. It's social interaction humor and pop culture references. The math "jokes" are just to make it harder to understand, which means the people "getting" it can pat themselves on the back about how nerdy they are, but ultimately, it's not what drives the comic.

Obscuring a comic for normal people as a comic for nerds was a pretty clever branding trick. Which is what makes it so successful.
