>A physicist at MIT has proposed the provocative idea that life exists because the law of increasing entropy drives matter to acquire life-like physical properties

What does /sci/ think of this?

I don't have a scientific background other than amateur reading but it kinda blew my mind.

What a surprise

Yawn

I think you can sum it up in a much more exciting way

basically according to this, depending on how homogenous a system is and how much energy input it receives, it's almost BOUND to produce life

that's pretty staggering stuff

I think there is some validity in it. I think there is definitely other life out there. The universe is so large and we live on a planet in a solar system that is not uncommon in the universe. The elements that make up our bodies are also very common. There is so much time going on for life to take hold.

I am saddening that I can't actually completely comprehend how life came into being and how it completely all works.

this is biology and physics, not math. Of course there will be approximations and estimates.

I heard this is how science works nowadays. You should check something called "climatology" for a good laugh, I heard they're still trying to make correct predictions

but thats just obvious and well known! Life for example (most probably) developed around hot geysirs underwater where a lot of different molecules were being formed and thrown around.

>Paranoia much?
Sometimes people don't like to write papers on their mobile phones for an image board.
But I will do it in lay-man terms

It is the concept/paradox that the chance of creating conscience as we know it today on earth, entropy wise "organized animals" are theoretically impossible, is far less likely than "conscience entities" being created out of a "thermodynamic goo" without anything embodying it.

This, on a more philosophical level, also implies that there's chance of your reality being the creation of such Boltzmann-Brain. Similar to the "virtual reality paradox"

happy now

Depends on the sub-discipline. Biophysics encompasses a number of different areas. But, I would agree that it has become a popular buzzword to describe interdisciplinary research. The field ebbs and flows, the latest seems to be systems biology.

That shit is obvious, but it's one of those things where undergrad chad comes up to wizened professor...

>Dr. X! What if...what if...life could arise simply from the spontaneous random interactions of particles colliding in a system with given rules?!?!?!
>shut up undergrad. prove it, then it's something to talk about. until then nobody cares because everyone suspects as much.
