As far as I gather, there is no real understanding in geology, it's just observing what has happened on earth and using it to predict similar behaviour other places. As such there doesn't seem to be much room for theoretical predictions like the Higgs boson. Without a theoretical framework, it's just birdwatching.

Here's a prediction: If I find any exposed strata of rock that no one has ever documented before, the layers that date the furthest back will always be located at the bottom with successively younger layers built on top. The only exceptions to this will be where strata have been upended or overturned, in which case the same pattern will play out just in a different direction.

Anyone who falls for that Ken Ham "historical science is different" bullshit deserves to be mocked.

>Geology (from the Greek γῆ, gē, i.e. "earth" and -λoγία, -logia, i.e. "study of, discourse"[1][2]) is the science comprising the study of solid Earth, the rocks of which it is composed, and the processes by which they change. Geology can also refer generally to the study of the solid features of any celestial body (such as the geology of the Moon or Mars).

As a geologist I approve of this thread.
Geology does in fact make predictions based on evidence. A good example of this is in minerals and resource exploration.
When people say Geology isn't science, I ask them how they think oil and ground water is discovered. Then I point out that observations lead to predictions being made (Salt dome often means oil underneath for various reasons). Those predictions are then tested and verified countless times.

So, when people say "Geology isn't a science" I always laugh and ignore them for it.

>If geology is not a science
It's not exactly correct to say that geology is not a science.

More precisely, geology is the application of other sciences to specifically studying the Earth.

>> No.6555631

>>6555619
If you put it that way, the only two real sciences are physics and chemistry.

Oh biology is just the application of other sciences to specifically studying organisms.

Oh astronomy is just the application of other sciences to specifically studying space.

Physics and chemistry are certainly what dictates what is going on in geology. Then of course we got what we see out in the field and in the lab. This shit is complicated since you can have so many things going on. For example, go back to >>6555586 . Look at the Yb/Gd. There is quite a bit of ways to look at why it is changing through time. As it stands now, we can't know for certain what is going down in magmatic bodies without drilling into them all over, if they still exist. Most of the data I collect is from stuff from the now eroded magmatic bodies.

Geology to me is beautiful since it is so complicated and pretty.

>If you put it that way, the only two real sciences are physics and chemistry.
I never said that geology isn't a "real" science. It's "real", but it's not a very pure and fundamental science.

>Oh biology is just the application of other sciences to specifically studying organisms.
But the separation between biology and physics&chem is much greater than the separation between geology and physics&chem.
A lot of the results of geology stem directly from physics.
In biology, however, you obviously can't derive things like evolution and genetics directly from physical principles.

>Oh astronomy is just the application of other sciences to specifically studying space.
Astrophysics, astrogeology, etc. can be thought of as specializations of physics, geology, etc.
They are specialized sciences, similarly to geology itself.

At least some of the words are easy enough get. I also think you should of asked for a chemist. This sort of stuff should be up their alley since we're working with solidified lava which was a liquid solution of a shit load of stuff that tells us about the magma's formation and evolution before it erupted out. Anyways...

a) Hawker diagram showing that this volcano is plotting in the field of rhyolite. Pretty felsic.

b) For the plot itself, I'm not sure why they didn't name the axes SiO2 / FeO+MgO+any other Fe or Mg mineral that I am forgetting. I don't think there is any... Either way, it doesn't have much of the FeO+MgO minerals. Make sense since the rocks already plots pretty felsic. Not sure what comendita means though.

c) Another Hawker diagram. It's still plotting in the comendita area.

d) REE plot. LREE on the left and the HREE on the right. The concentrations are normalized to chondrite. Makes sense considering this is a volcanic rock. Though, the HREE seems kind of flat.

e) I'm quite sure this is a spider diagram but I haven't seen this type before. Either way, LIL should be from Cs to Ba and the HFS are from Th to Lu.

I might have gotten some stuff wrong but either way, neat. I believe this volcano is in Italy so I'm not quite sure how those volcanoes exactly work. I can more or less tell you the story about North America but Europe? No idea.
