You must be talking to posers.

>> No.6441683

It's heavily used still, of course. But it's very proletarian, in that whatever use it for, the code could have been written 40 years ago if the applications would have been there. You get it done, but it's not art. That's not the person I want to be.

my uni professor(s) didnt want to put up with fucking overpriced private owned simple (nongraphic) simulation software, so they wrote their own in fortran

its kind of a pain to use

fuck off and do your work.

In the basement of the Niels Bohr Institute of Physics, where huge contributions in astronomy, particle physics, and quantum optics are taking place, there are still computers, actively used in these experiments, which use fortran PUNCH CARDS.

The damn cards are all over the fucking place, the labs are drowning in them.

Shit's for real, yo.

I'm a computer scientist and I would never say this.

If you want something done, do it in Fortran. If you can't do it in Fortran do it in assembly language. If you can't do it in assembly language then it's not worth doing.

It's just a popular joke article, he was joking, the article isn't serious, it was a joke. A joke.

Don't fucking think you can make jokes around here. This is a 24/7 mature adult zone. No jokers welcome. No wonder you chose to study computer science and not math. Life isn't just a game bucko.

A better question is how could you be a computer scientist with out knowing the Story of Mel and Real Programmers Don't Use Pascal. Or OS and JEDGAR. Or any other pieces of folklore.

>> No.6442210

The fact that so many scientists use fortran is disgusting.

There are better languages to use, now update your fucking programs you lazy assholes.

why does the universe choose to be?
because we want cool stuff instead of empty space

I have never seen anyone code in fortran and used any data structure that wasn't:
* A X
* A list of X
* A matrix of X
where X is a complex, real, or integer.

The program starts out with a dozen lines, and it's all simple enough to follow.. and then a year later, it's unsalvageable.

the point is you can be more productive-efficient with contemporary languages lake Python, a 20 lines Fortran program is a 5 lines Python program

and for the assembly shit, it is just that assembly is harder than Fortran

Because I write code for my own project, write code in rotating pairs at my company, do code reviews, re-factor old code to ensure high quality codebase, dive into image manipulation algos, study data mining and hang out stackoverflow & the likes.
