Please help me understand this. How do you figure out the IUPAC name for diagrams like this? I'm so frustrated i could cry.

>> No.6422836

Ive been given this problem to solve and have no idea where to even begin? i know you have to count the compounds running horizontally (i think) and thats where I look at this like wtf

>> No.6422845

find the longest chain (its 8 carbons)

- label everything coming off of it in alphabetical order ( you have only methyl groups coming off of it)

-assign them numbers based on the smallest number combination you can figure!

your choices are:

3,3,5-trimethyl octane

or

4,6,6-trimethyl octane

3,3,5 is the smallest POSSIBLE numbers (3 is the smallest number out of any of these number combinations.

3,3,5-trimethyl octane is your answer

i am in awe, how do you know that they are methyl groups?? thank you so much, I'm trying to study what you wrote

This kind of thing just makes me happy. Some anon takes time out of his day to help someone who needs it, even if it's below their level and they could easily make fun of them. +1 internet to you, good sir.

>trimethyl octane
wait whaaaat? I don't know what that is. Fuck me this class is too hard
And how do you know the choices?

>> No.6422861

>>6422845
also what are the 3,3,5 and 4,4,6 i am not grasping that?

Methyl has 1 carbon. It goes methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, for 1, 2, 3, and 4 carbons respectively.

this is not OP

Octane because the LONGEST possible chain has 8 carbons (oct=eight) trimethyl because there are three methyl groups (tri=three). 3,3,5 and 4,4,6 are the positions of the methyl groups (for example two methyls on the third and one on the fifth).

i want to thank you so much, such a better teacher than what I was taught in class today. she is some chemistry teacher that teaches high school by day and when it comes to her 7pm class she refuses to answer any questions it sucks. thank you for all your help i wrote down all your stuff

>> No.6422873

How can you not know how to do this?

Seriously /sci/, just ignore these homework help posts.

Organic chemistry is stringent for a reason...it weeds out all of the fucking retarded premed kids that are biology majors because their helicopter parents told them they are smart.

they are the carbon number that each branch (the methyl groups) are located on, counting from either end of the longest chain.

3,3,5 means the group is located on the third carbon twice and the fifth carbon once. 4,6,6 means the group is located on the fourth carbon once and the sixth carbon twice. Each of these makes sense, depending on which end of the longest chain you start counting from, so you pick the smallest one.

Nobody made you bump it. He was trying to get understanding, not necessarily help with his homework. Just because you know more than him at this point in time it doesn't mean that he is inferior. There was once a time when you didn't understand organic chem either.

Better me trying to complete school than suck the money out of the US and receive welfare or work some minimum wage job for the rest of my existence. That or become a criminal. Ill bust my ass in school and do my best.

this isnt even organic chem

3 di methyl 5 propyl octane

whatever.

No one actually cares about iupac names.
they aren't important.

what I just said is close enough that no chemistry student or chemist would be confused

I think it's funny how people on this board worship this anon like a god, when any sophomore chemistry student should know this stuff like his ABC's.

IUPAC was founded in 1919, btw. There's not really very many of such things as "new chemistry". This is all relatively old information that everybody already knows.

Just goes to show how few actual scientists browse this board.

I'm not worshipping him, I'm grateful that someone took time out of their day to explain something to me. If you don't understand that well I feel sorry for you. He is the reason I can now complete my homework and move forward with learning.

Nobody said it was impressive he knew it. They said it was admirable that he took his time to explain a basic concept to someone in need instead of ridiculing them.

i take it you mean getting them 100 percent right isn't important, not that one should memorize every common name for compounds

Except you added two carbon atoms that aren't there.
