As a (former) student of physics I don't know why one would study engineering in the first place, but here I don't quite see why you are led to imply that math/physics would be a subject where you'd get better grades.

Are you actually studying? Just spend an hour or two in the afternoon/evening hanging with your engbros and then hit the books at night. It's all abut time management

First term I fucking did bro, I finished with a 2.2 GPA (C+ average). I gave up everything. I simply was not able to perform on the tests, even though the content made sense, the amount of owrk reqiured to put in and perform flawless solutions on que without having to think about them was too much.

For winter break I just layed on my bed and kept on thinking about my life was over. Got nothing done, played video games all day and now I'm at the start of an even harder semester and I don't know what the fuck to do. I'm panicking.

(I'm not really failing, but I foresee it in the near future).

/sci/ convinced you to do engineering? You homosexual, bro? Not that there's anything wrong with that, we tolerant now.

But maybe you simply do not like engineering as much as you thought you would. You should study something that is fun. Personally I can't wait for next monday when my courses start.

I just don't know how to. I did find all the study tips and hacks and all this shit, and the "hurr practice problems are KING".

The fact is you have to spend 90% of the god damn day doing practice problems that cause you mental stress and the shit is jut so god damn hard after an hour

it probably doesnt help that i have periodic adderall crashes (along with half of the other kids here)

>> No.6290440

>>okay.ttf, this shouldnt be easy. Engineers are dumb as fuck anyway
You obviously went into it thinking you were hot shit and have no applicable study habits to speak of.
Just about any hard science field you go into will be like this. If you can't bring yourself to study appropriately then you should probably stick to the humanities where the actual dumb fucks go.

I'm not dumb, I am actually smarter than most people here (Not that it's a measure of intelligent). I understand concepts, I actually enjoy learning about (most) of this stuff.

But the work ethic. I've never had it. In highschool, shit was a breeze. Here; there are so many abstract rules and formulas that we are told to ignore all intuition and simply memorize. The penhand that writes these solutions is the hand that's spent hundreds of hours writing similar problems.

I tried to put in all the work I could. It simply is too much work.

I can guarantee that you aren't "smarter than most people here". If you think you are then you're obviously going into this thinking your hot shit. But that's expected from some 19 year old little shit just getting into college. Your type is a dime a dozen kid. Hell, I was just like you when I started. it has to do with putting in so much work to be able to reproduce solutions without having to think about them.

Imagine doing a hard physics problem you understand but takes oyu time to think to get through it, say it takes you 15 mins.

Now say you only have 5 mins to do a variation of it on a test

you need to repeatedly do different questions over and over and over until its second nature, and its juts so fucking boring

This thread is quite appealing to me, I feel like I could get something out of it. 2014 is my final year at high school (Australia) and I have no idea what the fuck I'm doing with my future. I thoroughly enjoy maths and physics and peak the top of class in my, albeit abnormally small, private school. I can't see myself doing anything but going to university, but I have no idea what course to do. I've considered engineering (no idea what kind) but I still have no idea. As for my spare time currently, I'm a socially awkward basement dweller. I spend 95% of my spare time on my PC playing games, browsing and sitting in TeamSpeak with my other like-minded friends. What I was hoping to find here is just a little bit of guidance as to what type of course I could pursue at university.

Engineering is nice because there isn't a horrible struggle for a job after. If you go into a pure science, you have to be prepared to get a completely unrelated career... which is perfectly okay. I know a biology PhD who works for the post office, and a well-published physicist who works in a water treatment plant. I ended up going into trades after my PhD. But engineers get set up with companies for their EIT stuff, and that usually leads to job offers.

Do a graduate degree only for interest/bettering yourself; treat it like a backpacking trip around Europe or something, only instead of banging French chicks on a Mediterranean beach you're reading research papers and debugging legacy computer code.

Anyway, if you're in high school, you still have no idea what you're going to like. Don't worry about it. Take some classes you think you'll enjoy, have fun, and think about careers and stuff in a few years.

I feel you on the time thing though, just memorize your equations and what they relate to, probably help you solve things much faster. That said there were many bright people in my class, they understood concept, most finished with a C. I got an A because i did the work and will not settle for less. Think about how many people graduate with a piece of paper saying they're an engineer,
Now the people who will get the really good jobs are simply the ones who will outwork the others, and can demonstrate discipline.
Learn this, I had to as well, I actually dropped out of high school because i was a lazy piece of shit.

from a chemE i have to say the combination of shitload of different topics, the around of formulas you need to know how to use from cellular reproduction to fluid flow to thermodynamics to electrodynamics along with keeping in mind that you can at any time find a situation where you need to calculate the substrate left in a moving fluid with varieng temperature in a electromagnetic gradient combined with the amount of soft skills/science you need to obtain on your own, like communication skills, economy, management and admin related shit, engineering is probably the hardest thing to do. I did a math+physics degree afterwards and that shit was so easy, you take the textbook or notes of a specific subject, read them, do the questions, and youre done. you can then get a perfect score on the test.
