You could say "anyone could have done it" about a great many seminal experiments in science. In fact, I would say that only an experiment that anyone could do is a good experiment - that means it's simple, easy to understand and interpret, easy to modify, adapt or build on, and easy to reproduce (crucial!).

Michael Eisen says in his blog:
