Biology is heavy in memory, as opposed to working out things. There is very little maths in it, and is almost entirely remembering cell functions, names etc. It's interesting though, if you are prepared to study for hours on end.

I'm trying to find a job as an actuary for when I graduate in May. Not the most STEM related career path but it's mostly math. What I really want is to get a mathematical finance degree and find a job as a quant, but I'm a senior in college and haven't done any research or internships and don't know any of my professors so I'm not even going to waste my money applying to grad school, maybe I'll try again when I have a couple years experience and can get a supervisor to recommend me.

Just got my Biology BS earlier this year.

Really want to move across country for my MS though but the school I wanted to go to (Oregon State) isn't offering an MS program this year, and most of the other schools I was considering don't really offer MS programs so I'm taking some time off. Scored really well on my GRE writing and reading, but would like to bump up my math so I might retake it. Plus I need to get letters of rec from some of my undergrad advisers/mentors.

Other than that I've been working in a govt microbiology lab for the past 2 years and have 2 years experience working in an ecology lab and 2 years in a genetics lab at school. Getting my name on a paper soon too.

It's pretty frustrating trying to find good MS programs though. They don't get as much funding and the schools have less interest in enrolling masters students since they're only expected to work at the campus for 2 years anyways (as opposed to 4 for a PhD). Plus trying to get in state tuition for an out of state college would require me to live in that state for a year prior to enrollment, etc. etc. It's such a fucking hassle. Hopefully I'll be able to get this all sorted out and get a good job doing epigenetic work somewhere on the west coast.

They solely exist to cram for exams so they can make a sufficient GPA, then they forget fucking everything about what they were supposed to learn. In hindsight, I wish I'd thought more about my choice of degree before going to uni. I'd have gone for a mathier subject.

Make sure you really want to do biochemistry. Wanting to be a genetic engineer for the purpose of creating new species or whatever is not enough. You need to have a passion in the mechanisms of cells and proteins and nucleic acids at the chemical level. Trust me. GMing was the reason I got myself into this mess.

I really liked biology and ochem and I'm okay at math, at least enough to survive physical chemistry (no more proofs please)

But I ended up not really liking biochemistry until I really sunk my teeth into metabolic pathways, which was the focus of my second term. The first part is basically learning the ABCs, relearning cell functions in much more detail. My third part was DNA metabolism, which was kind of interesting but not so much.

If I had a choice of studying something, it'd be something like GTP metabolism. I saw it used a lot in DNA metabolism but not as much elsewhere, which seems interesting.

The project I proposed last year (and will propose again this year, since I didn't get the funding) had me going to Antarctica to do some geobiochem on some soils in the Dry Valleys, and to bring back a nice sample for further study of the microbio community within.

Geology + Biology + Chemistry = bros for life

Molecular Biology + Biochemistry + Pharmacy

OR

Molecular Biology + Pharmacy + Oncology

Still choosing. Also might go haywire and do physics.
