Sal Khan sucks at teaching math.
Seriously.

That guy needs to get off his high horse and learn how to teach math before he fools more people into thinking that they understand concepts that they've learned by rote.

I guess teacher quality is subjective. His vids helped me out considerably when I was still in high school.

>> No.5958481

A good teacher has a good plan based on their profound understanding of the principles underlying the subject of each lecture. A good teacher strives to build each student's understanding by leveraging their experience.
There are videos where Khan actually says "I hope that's not too confusing".
You have to explain why you're doing what you're doing on the blackboard. There needs to be a clear sequence of concepts.

Have you ever taken a course where the professor "wings" every lecture?
Not a math course!

It's free, you don't have to watch them. The majority of the people who watch his videos are just trying to pass high school math and Sal manages to do just that.

Why don't you get off your high horse and teach yourself instead?

I agree, he's a not a very good teacher. All the math teachers I had when I was in high school were way better. I don't understand why he insists on doing all the videos himself - in one take! Is it just his ego? I'm sure there are thousands of gifted teachers who would be thrilled to provide better prepared lectures if given the chance. Hell, I'd do a few.

That said, he's doing a great thing and helping a lot of people, and I agree with his vision for how education might be improved.

He does a good job at educating people in basic principles and its "for free". I really don't see the harm in that

Just because people cannot afford to study with the best teachers or lecturers in the world doesn't mean they shouldn't get the opportunity to learn.

Get off your fucking high horse OP and go out there and teach online for free. Then you can criticize his methods. You act like a spoilt rich kid child posting shit like what you put above.

I enjoy the work his does because he explains things from the basic level up. There is nothing wrong with that and if you don't like it simple don't fucking watch it.

Just because you paid a shit load of money to learn from super teacher doesn't mean that what you learnt is any better because guess what fuckhead. Their all the same mathematical principles.

If someone learns something another way than you but still arrives at the same solution at the end of the day whats the fucking problem. Chances are because they have been shown how it works from basics and why as opposed to being thrown a bullshit formula and saying it is because well it is and memorizing it imo gives you less understanding of why it is. I know plenty of university teachers that do this and it shits me off.

Kahn academy is a great learning resource and OP is a butt hurt rich kid having a cry because his parents are paying a shit load for his education while others are learning it for free.

3 months ago i started at only being able to do basic addition, now im starting linear algebra, he is the only teacher i have ever had to actually go through each step with some kind of frame work that the individual student have the atleast the basic understanding.

also they replace the old videos and update the tests so its constantly improving.

and now i do at times think he should do his working out faster in some videos, but thats now... after HE has taught me.

in a few months i have learned more than i had ever done in formal education, although i must say the biggest shock has been to learn that to have been innumerate is probably worse than being illiterate, and how the fuck can society accept to raise innumerate children? its as though they want people to live as animals rather than men.

(yes i need to learn english and grammer now too, i know that NOW)

Actually I have many times before and those teachers are some of the best I ever had. Khan explains things in a really nice, usually concise, way. He doesn't always do it 100% right, but he seems to upload videos re-explaining things if too many people comment saying they didn't get it.
He's not going to be able to physically cram the information into your brain, but he does a very good job of teaching.

>> No.5965290

>>5960633
This. So much this.
Sometimes if my brain just kind of wanders for a minute I will miss something very important. I can't just tell a real teacher to shut up and let me think for a second, and I can't rewind them either.
I think the hardest thing about Khan academy (as with anything that isn't face-to-face) is that it's often hard to consistently motivate yourself to learn.

>> No.5965292

>>5963761
I don't find that at all. I've never been able to absorb things very well just by reading them. If I'm struggling with something, often all it takes is to hear a human's voice explaining it and then to go off and try it.
