Hey guys, I tried /b/ and they were of little help. So I'm here to ask you guys for help. I have a friend who wants a job that's biology related. Preferably in a lab? Can you guys give me some ideas?

Basically. I never thought of it like that. I personally am going for a psychology field. I'm still just looking for some ideas for her

never heard of Biophysics? Organic Chemistry? Have you ever simulated proteins in a QM/MM?

>>5905639
Don't try to find work in a lab. It just sucks. I used to be keen about labwork as well. But is a terrible repetitive job. The only good aspect of labwork is data analysis. but if you are not in academica, you will most likely work your ass off and leave the fun part to your boss

Seems legit. Do you have any recommendations then?

>never heard of Biophysics?
Biophysics is a field of physics and requires you to study physics.

>Organic Chemistry?
As the name suggests, OC is chemistry. Together with calculus OC is among the courses most biology majors fail.

>Have you ever simulated proteins in a QM/MM?
This is a matter of biochemistry, physics and programming. A biologist wouldn't be qualified to do it.

I know I came here for questions about biology and job recommendations. Biology Is a form of science. So if you don't like biologists then that's fine. I'm just here for ideas

Well, there are other avenues out there, and I don't know them all, but if it's a lab job your friend wants, then that's the typical route. Otherwise they should apply to entry level lab jobs that don't require any experience and hope they land one.

You can also do clinical lab science/medical lab tech. Smear poop on a plate and get paid upwards of $60,000 USD/yr for it.

i am sorry to scatter your view on this, but all those fields are intersection of those respective fields. You will always find a mix of scientists in those fields. Which leads to: >>5905668 also see pic

As for OPs question: Don't do it, if you don't want to do academica, otherwise see: >>5905669

In Industry you might be lucky at: Pharmacy, Agronomy, and smaller Labs, those who do dna-sequenzing and stuff.

Clearly you never attended a university. Because if you did, you'd know what qualifications biologists don't acquire.

To be honest, these are totally valid statements.

>This is a matter of biochemistry, physics and programming. A biologist wouldn't be qualified to do it.

This one is a bit unfair to those biologists who are truly dedicated to their field, and have developed an interdisciplinary approach to science. Stop generalizing.

Bio is pretty broad anyway. I'd suggest doing alot of online research to find out things that may interest her. For instance, I do computational neuroscience, but this grill I was talking to this morning is interested in ethnobotany or anthropological biology and those have vastly different skills. Your friend should look up what interests her, then look at jobs online for it, then gather up all the requirements/qualifications that are necessary in those job ads, then find out how she can best go about getting those skills.

I don't know. I mean, lab coordinator or lab manager seems like a possibility, but it may be that you need a masters degree to get those positions.
