I heard that MIT is really selective, and to ensure my acceptance I plan to build a fusor. That by itself should be enough, but if I can get 1st place in my high school science fair, then my odds will be even better. I can also rub it in the faces of my classmates who don't think that I can build a fusion reactor in my garage. Does anyone have a good place to start, with some easy to follow instructions?

Retired health physicist here,

Before you even start buying the parts, invest in a neutron detector with an in date calibration. A regular dosimeter is not good enough (but is also essential for Bremsstrahlung and gamma it will kick out). Also, bear in mind that tritium is really hard to detect so good ventilation is the order of the day (hydrogen is really good at penetrating 'gas tight' seals).

Neutron radiation is nasty shit, lead is surprisingly ineffective at stopping it. You'll want to alternate layers of lead with boronated polythene and watch out for things like wet brick reflecting stray neutrons back at you. Remember, dose is dependant on rate, proximity, shielding and exposure time. Also, a billion neutrons that eventually kill a shitty video camera (for monitoring) are worth one in the eye (cataracts)

Radiation isn't something to be feared, it's a risk that can be minimised like anything else, it's just a little harder to actually measure the risks.

Cataracts are not the real concern here, that damage is to the surface of the eye and sometimes the lens, they can usually be treated a few times before real damage. The issues is that at those energy it can easily reach the rods and cones directly damaging the inner workings of the eye, think permanent blindness.
Still better to sacrifice replaceable video cameras then your eyes.

It's not like he'll be able to pull a vacuum capable of making a fusor actually carry out fusion. It's almost certain that it'll only create a superheated plasma that glows and looks cool. Still wouldn't recommend looking directly at it, if you do I'd advise you to wear some UV-proof glasses.

Stop giving away my ideas!!! I've already started, i have a 2.1 tesla field in the center of the tokamak just from the toroidal field when at optimum power (according to preliminary tests) but i'm gonna amp up the current next week which should be reflected in the strength of the field. Once i have found the optimum current to get 10 - 15 T then i will inject the deuterium/helium -3/ Tritium mixture and begin heating. Also neutron protection i have coated the interior with a beryllium and lithium mix, this will cause the more dangerous high energy neutrons to be reflected back into the plasma giving some of its kinetic energy to the plasma thus heating it and the lithium should breed tritium.
