Carl Sagan actually did a lot of great normal science. Nothing as big as those names, especially Grothendieck, but still had a very respectable career, even when not considering what was done outside of academia. Bill Nye isn't a scientist and would be the first person to tell you so. NDT is just an arrogant douche.

It's a good pic, sagan and bill nye brought science into the lives of thousands of children, they might not be on the level of Feynman, Newton, or other great contributors, but they stir up people imaginations.

I'd rather laypeople have them as idols over most other people they idolize, even if a lot of real scientists don't really care for them.
