Why are people retarded and say "1" or "10" to the following statement?

Pick a number between 1 and 10.

I think he means that if you pick 1 or 10, you have the least possible chances of getting the correct number. 5 or 6 gives the best possible chance. If there are two people x and y are competing for the closest to a number and x says 1, y says 2 and has 90% chance to win, as opposed to x who has 10%.

Because same as the reason most people say Three Hundred and Twenty to mean 320. It's not correct in the strict sense, but when people speak a language in an informal setting they rarely do it 100% correctly.

>> No.5856138

>>5856113
Not from a mathematical point if view. As far as picking the exact number 1 and 10 have the same as everything else 1/10.

Of course you were probably thinking closest to number, in which case every other number is touching at least 1 more number than 1 or 10.

Or perhaps you were thinking of the human tendency to pick around 5 anyway...not very /sci/ though.

i don't understand why "three hundred and twenty" is incorect, but "three hundred twenty" is correct.

as far as i know, when there is a word problem, "and" means to add. Also, when you don't put anything between two numbers, aka: "three hundred" you multiply. "(3)(100)"

so "three hundred twenty" = (3)(100)(20) = 6000
else "three hundred and twenty" = (3)1(100)+20 = 320

if i am wrong, please explain where my logic went wrong?

Moot point and both are correct nowadays. However, historically the 'and' would have been wrong as it used to indicate in spoken language the location if the decimal (e.g. one hundred and one was 100.1 while one hundred one was 101).
