eventually all life would cease because of the death of vegetation.

>simple answer.

well we would still get a little bit of light form the moon (about one candle). not sure if that would be enough to power solar panels

All of them, -all living things- are indirectly linked to the production of oxygen by plants and the water cycle.

Holy shit, Europa is beautiful.

Also, doesn't life need ENERGY to function properly, even when we're talking about the most primordial, one-cell organisms? And geothermal energy has nothing to do with the sun, but rather with the planet's core. So wouldn't it be possible for some rogue planet, ejected into space and not orbiting any star but orbiting the galaxy directly, to host life?

all life on earth is reliant on oxygen. It was there, its produced by plants and constantly being refreshed, and without the sun producing light, plants would die, the food chains would break down, all land life either starves or freezes as the planet inevitably cools from the lack of sun. A few extremophiles might hang on in the deep sea vents, but that will be a losing battle.

in Europa, oxygen is replaced by other chemicals, and the suns energy is replaced by geothermal energy due to Jupiters immense gravity. Because Jupiter isn't going to one day run out of gravity like the sun will one day run out of fuel, the life on Europa will likely be able to survive if the sun were to vanish. Whatever we find on Europa will be some sort of extremophile, and certainly very few land dwellers if any-europa hasn't got an atmosphere and the surface is frozen solid.

Besides energy the life WE know needs Oxygen at its most fundamental level. Energy is nothing without oxidation in cells.

you say that like I didn't account for it. An extremophile that feeds off of a heat vent in a frozen, polluted, deoxygenated ocean would be probably be bacteria of some sort.

That's life, sure, but just barely.

>> No.5781362

well I'm assuming we'd begin hurtling through space in a tangent from the second the sun disappeared, more than likely fly through the asteroid belt, get pelted on the way through, and freeze to death if we survive that.
