I'm doing horrible in math. We're doing pre-calc stuff and I understand it somewhat and can follow along in class or one on one with the teacher, but I do horrible on tests and quizzes (fail most of them) and it's really hurting my grade. Any suggestions on what I can do?

what i do if i don't understand a concept is to read a different textbook or find a youtube video i.e look at the concept from as many angles as possible.

if that fails, maybe try a tutor.

KhanAcademy.org, Schaum's Outline of Precalculus.

Also, I highly suggest talking with the teacher and getting together with other students. There might be a math club, or you can just ask around.

What are you having trouble with in particular

Post a problem for example

This, and give us some more information. Are you a high school student or is this a college course? My first thought is that if it's the latter and you've been failing all of your assignments, you should drop the course and audit it. No reason to get a bad grade on your transcript, and you'd have some stress-free time to study the material.

Math is senseless chicken-scratch anyway.
Not worth learning.

well that's the thing our stupid math program relies solely on the teacher to teach. The books only give you problems. No explanations on anything.

I don't have any exact problems on me at the moment, but we're doing stuff like finding the domain and range of an equation, solving inequalities using sign graph method...

Yes, I agree but sadly it still affects my GPA and future.

Buy a textbook then? They can be pretty handy.

What problems do you have with finding the domain and range of an equation? Just think about which values do and don't work with it,

e.g. y = x^2

The range would be any number greater than zero because you can't square any real numbers to get numbers less than zero.

Separate question on my part. If some people in america only start learning this in university what the hell do they get taught in high school? Here in england we get taught at least a little calculus by the time we're 16.

Well first off, math isn't 'useless chicken scratch' and you just agreed with a troll which makes you sound stupid as fuck. Are you some sort of 15 year old junior or something? Anyway.

Give some example problems and we can work through them. Math is not a passive learning experience, you have to actively engage the material to learn it.

We DO learn Pre-calc and sometimes even calc in high school. It just depends on how well some people do in school to be able to make it that high. I did horrible in high school so I did not make it to that level. However, now in college I do really well in math so I have some catching up to do.
