Departments should be honest with people who aren't geniuses trying to get a PhD. They should just say, look, you can do this. But, if you want to be an academic you are going to have a hell of a time.

Of course, they never will. They need people to employ in their labs and teach their courses.

Although, I think people wouldn't listen anyways. People who have IQs 1 sigma above the mean tend to think they are 2 sigma above the mean and don't like it if you point that out.

its counter intuitive, but the more prestigious, accepted, trustworthy, accredited, etc. universities typically tend to utilize vague and non-specific titles for their degree programs, even at the graduate level

Don't get me wrong, there are obviously exceptions.
but most people accept that someone with a Ph.D. in "Materials Science" could have specialized and therefore possess their greatest amount of knowledge in areas as diverse as classic synthetic organic chemistry (applicable to everything from high performance polymers, drug delivery, phomask development, organic semiconductors/conductors, two photon absorbing dyes or pigments, etc.) all the way to theoretical solid state physics (modelling 2DEG in a heterostructure, current density in a single-molecule CNT gate, hot carrier injection through a purely capacitively coupled structure in a microstructure, crystal growth of ZnO deposited from solution, etc.)

this concept is completely standard, accepted, and almost expected.

The material will have a faster impact if it is simplified into a system that is easily used without understanding all of the mechanics of the system, like calculus without analysis. While denser pieces of mathematics may take decades for society at large to absorb, they are certainly very useful. i don't agree with this characterization of the trades as dead-end jobs.
let's assume you're an Anon with a good head on his shoulders but isn't making it in academia. you decide to get into plumbing, because the irony of letting shit flow so you have a good place to shit is kinda funny to me. here are some very general observations:
1. you'll be good at it - the average plumber-in-training probably isn't very bookish; as such, the curriculum will - as it always does - appeal to the lowest common denominator.
2. you'll be held in high esteem of your coworkers - you'll know how to do your work, and you'll also know things they don't.
3. your competition isn't as tough - this one explains itself
4. upward mobility - you'll have it better than other people and will know more about certain things. who says you can't start your own company?

chill. I came from an inner city school(admittedly it was oe of those catholic schools but still..it sucked) and only got a shitty dose of pre algebra. I moved to a mostly white pivate school for high school. I struggled in algebra I a bit but only because my definition of struggling getting Cs one the tests(got only a few Bs). Got a B for the final grade because of final. Plus I know some stupid girls who did not come from inner city(it was an all girl school) and failed.
That bitch is just stupid.

Well not all are autistic (you sound like a hatter again) but if you're good at research and have phd you can get into a good research area in a pharmaceutical company and make money. Or if you're smart in general and get with a good research firm. How can you say it's a "complete" waste of time when research by scientists are the reason why you have half the shit you have?
