Do you ever get the feeling it's nice people are interested but you can't answer their questions and that you're a let down?
I also tried to tell them that the why something exists and does what it does question isn't really a great question because it presupposes an inherent meaning but they didn't accept that.

Anyone got similar family experiences where they try to sound interested in your studies?

Try to answer people's questions as best you can and if you can't, never be afraid to say "I don't know."

This is probably one of the hardest concepts in the world to get across to someone who doesn't understand it.

what do you mean by "inherent meaning?" It feels like you missed a subject in there...

Yes, I volunteer at a space museum. Most of the people who come in gloss over the exhibits. But about 5% are actually interested and ask questions, that I don't know, I bullshit through it and give some semblance of a nice conclusion but I feel guilty about it.

Inherent meaning I take to mean, that it had to be that way to serve a purpose or that it had, that the universe had some specific end goal in mind.
